We usually become more sophisticated, we almost become robots.
What can we do to keep our humanity?
The pace at which science, technology, engineering, and mathematics have accelerated has recently accelerated, but between the beatings of drums, there is a crisis of culture.
As we gallop aggressively on the path leading to machine control, we forget the essential basis of being human.
As we try to perfect each process to the best, collect more data and accumulate more information, we forget that information is not knowledge, and knowledge is not the same as wisdom. When technology people try to expand the boundaries of life, do they remember why?
Science, of course, is beautiful and has great importance in providing a connection to our very existence. Scientific investigations reveal the truths of the universe and our place in its space, and there is no doubt that academic degrees in science have value. But as we rush toward the goal and try to be more and more technical, we must also consider the meaning of being human. We need not worry about technology but about the possibility of losing our humanity.
The most important jobs in the future will be more human - and no less - in essence.
The most appropriate tasks for automation are those that involve memorization and pre-dictation. But this is not new. For some time, machines have been perfecting processes for humans, allowing us to focus on the less routine tasks that are not known in advance. There is no doubt that understanding information and technology is useful, but also the ability to translate information from the machine to the human world has great value.
These abilities tend to ignore a name that is "soft" but this is exactly the lubricant for the wheels of the productive organizations.
As we learn to measure and manage data, we must also learn how to be human. As we learn to write code, we may as well learn to write poetry. Following Google's internal memos, which questioned the capabilities of women engineers, whatever happens in uber and the discrimination practiced, we must reveal the importance of empathy. If we want to ensure that we cannot be replaced by an automaton, we must think again about the value of communication, cooperation, and unrestrained creativity.
Here are 4 ways you can change your own automated tasks to human activities.
- Read about the past - Fiction and non-fiction historical literature can move us to another time and place and force us to recognize that the world does not belong to us. Those who are afraid of the changing world will calm down to discover their tendency to repeat themselves, and those who gallop ahead may gain guidance and learn from the mistakes of the past. We can admire Jane Austen's descriptions of the time and humor or the guilt and agony of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's characters. We can recall our good fortune by diving into Charles Dickens books or by experiencing the sarcastic interpretation of contemporary literature that forces us to critically examine our point of view.
- Create something in your hands - Use the hands and not just the brain. Go in flowing with jazz in the background when you draw on the canvas. Buy a notebook and make charcoal drawings, go to the park without your phone and write down what you see around. Go to evening classes in carpentry or pottery where you can turn raw materials into shapes and feel the emotional value of doing from beginning to end.
For example, I work in wood in my spare time, and the result is an intimate understanding and great pleasure in the work.
- Learn to listen - Today we are converting conversations in "tweets," compressed attacks into 140 characters of bursts of emotion. We leaf, flutter so we can answer "Yes, I read about it." But reading about something is not like reading something. Consider the possibility of joining a local reading club. You will meet other people who live differently from you, and you will also have to think about the interpretations and opinions of others. As you read the selected book each month, think of it as a journey beyond the horizon of your comfort zone. Make yourself listen instead of preaching, and enter every meeting with an open mind and willingness to hear rather than argue.
- Talk to a stranger in real life - Sometimes the simplest smile may open the possibility of acquaintance and conversation. A moment of unplanned meetings with someone else might challenge your prejudices. When we sit in silence, we judge, we make assumptions. We learn to be open because we recognize our mistakes in others. Simple interactions do not have to lead to Linkedin.
As we run forward toward the digital world, it's worth taking a step back and thinking how to get better. The refinement of our humanity is as valuable as studying code. We do not need to convert to each other, but to understand that we need both. They learned to program in Python, but then they read a book by Plutarch. Write programs in Java, but read James Joyce. Otherwise, we will all live in a world envisioned by George Orwell.
