This poem is about of man of great power.
His name was Dwight David Eisenhower.
Born in Texas in the year eighteen nine zero.
Join the US military, became a national hero.
--
His famous nickname he got when he was a tike.
His father the same nickname “Big” and “Little” Ike.
Military history learned from mother’s book collection.
He knew that in life he had found his direction.
--
He went to West Point in the year nineteen one one.
His eventually rise to greatness had finally begun.
His favorite subject at West Point was English by far.
He finished school with discipline less than stellar.
--
His graduating class of 1915 had a phenomenon.
It became known as “the class the stars fell on”.
In 1918 he finally got orders to go to France.
Then the armistice cheated him out of that chance.
--
He was an adviser for MacArthur in the Philippines.
But they had many issues with each other it seems.
Although they worked together, through the strife.
The problems they had lasted the rest of their life.
--
In November of 1942 he got his first big chance.
When he was put in charge of Torch and Avalanche.
The first non-British commander in over 200 years.
He proved his worth to many, a lot of them his peers.
--
Respected by many and by the troops he was adored.
He became the Supreme Commander of Operation Overlord.
On June 6th of 1944 the invasion of Normandy prevailed.
It would have been the end of it all if we had failed.
--
Due to his tactics and doing nothing that was subpar.
On December 20th of 1944 he received his fifth star.
He decided to pass on the 1948 Presidential primary.
Because he didn’t want to leave the US military.
--
He gave up his position as NATO Commander in 1952.
It was the time in his life to pursue another avenue.
Since he was loved by many soldiers and civilians alike.
He won the Presidency with the slogan “I like Ike”
