Your first plant looks some kind of Graptosedum, maybe 'Francesco Baldi'. That is a hybrid between Graptopetalum and Sedum. They are pretty. I love really old mammillaria!

The worm inside the bag-like structure is called a bagworm, they carry it around to hide inside. The brown worm is a butterfly, a very large and beautiful swallowtail. It's camouflaged to look like bird

Many people use builders river sand although I find that it also gets compacted unless I spend a lit of time sieving it. Sometimes I buy washed silica sand which has a particle size of 1.5-2mm
