Poland's Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has fined Gazprom $ 7.6 billion for launching Nord Stream 2 without approval. This amount is almost 10% of Gazprom’s annually revenue!
Along Gazprom, UOKiK imposed penalties on the five western companies that are responsible for co-financing the project. Engie, Uniper, OMV, Shell and Wintershall.
Poland believes Nord Stream 2 is a threat to Europe as it will increase its dependency on Russian energy.
UOKiK also believes that the operation of Nord Stream 2 will threaten the gas supply in Poland and throughout Europe.
The project Nord Stream 2 aims to double Russia's gas export capacity across the Baltic Sea.
I believe that if the pipeline is completed and operational, the Russians will increase their influence throughout Europe by threatening to cut off gas. This way Russia can be imposed on all states.
