Ryanair proceeded in an order that made many heads turn when announced.
Although the corona crisis that hit airlines heavy has not been overcome and even though the 737 MAX airplanes were grounded and forbitten to fly for over 20 months, the airline announced that it has placed an order to purchase from Boeing 75 new aircrafts of that type.
The value of the deal amounts to 9.4 billion dollars without taking into account the usual discounts provided in those type of deals.
Boeing’s 737 MAX airplanes were ordered from International Aviation Authority to seize flights after 2 airplanes of that type were involved in 2 different deadly accidents in less than 5 moths time. Official investigations about the 2 crashed revealed major construction and security faults in the design and safety procedures of Boeing.
The 737 MAX airplane is now one of the most thoroughly searched and inspected planes in the world. It is considered now a safe plane for travel and I am in no position to argue that.
But the order seems to me more like a way for Ryanair and Boeing to come to an agreement on the compensation involved for the 2 crashes and is definitely a way to balance their sheets for the closing of 2020.
