Story story!!! stoo~ryy!!
Hehehehe馃槄
It's a real storytelling contest in the @hivelearners community. No fiction stories is the rule for this particular storytelling contest, It has to be a real story about me or someone that I know.. Hmmmm!馃
So many stories have been springing up to my mind ever since I came across this contest, but I just have to tell one story!
It's a story about my academic journey during my university days..
Calculation courses like mathematics and the likes has been my worse subjects ever since my primary school days. Sometimes, I wonder how I found my way into science class during my secondary school days when it was time for me to make a choice on my career path. Well, I guess it was my love for biology that made me a science student.. I loved biology so much and had almost all the topics on my fingertips. But I struggled with other science related courses like physics, chemistry, statistics because they have one huge calculation or the other.
No matter how hard I studied for these calculation courses, I either got an "F" grade (Failed) or luckily an "E" grade (Pass) It was a very challenging moment for me during these times.
Luckily, I graduated from secondary school, wrote my jamb exams, passed my exams and made my way to the university to study Parasitology
Basically my course of study Parasitology, is a study of parasites. I chose this course cus I felt it was all about Biology not knowing that I'll be doing a handful of other calculation courses馃槱
I should have known better only if I had an elder sibling or someone close to me who had passed through the walls of a university to give me an academic advice.
My first year in the university felt like I was back to my struggles again. Rushing for early morning lectures only to go sit and learn boring calculation courses like physics 101, chemistry 111 & 101, further mathematics and of course the almighty mathematics in a crowded hall filled with students who can barely hear the lecturer was so frustrating. *It was one of the worse moments of my life.. I remember how I constantly checked my departmental booklet to take note of a bunch of calculation courses all piled for me each semester.. I literally had nightmares each time I checked them out.
I so wished that all the courses I offered were just like biology or other readable courses.. I would not have had any form of difficulty in school cus I was so good with them and also made "A"s and "B"s.
So my first semester, 100 level exams came up.. I studied so hard to at least get an "E" grade in the calculation courses. You might be wondering why I settled for a lesser grade right? If you've been in my condition you won't dare judge me馃槄
I joined a study group of engineering students to help myself out, we had our night prep classes together and honestly, depriving myself of sleep those moments were not funny at all. The days for each of the calc courses came, I wrote the little I knew and when the results were finally out, I failed maths 101 and had an "E" in other calculation courses.
Second semester exams came and same thing happened again.. but this time I failed two courses maths 102 and physics 102馃槩
And in my 300 level first semester, we offered a statistics course which I also failed when the result finally came out.
I felt like a dummy! Failing these courses meant rewriting them in my 200 level first and second semester and as for the statistics, it meant I was going to rewrite it in my final year first semester. I rewrote the first three that I failed and when the results were out, I passed somehow馃檪
I made a "D" in two courses and "E" in maths 102.. My people, I jumped for joy!.. At least I won't have anything to do with those courses ever again.
I had statistics carryover to deal with in my first semester final year. This was the big deal!
Now you'll agree with me that this is the most deadly time to deal with a carryover course because if at the end of the whole rewriting and you fail again, that means an extra year for you.
I studied so hard for this particular carryover course and other normal courses for the semester. I wrote the exam, waited patiently for the results to be released the next semester but my result was withheld.. Hmmm! I was so afraid of what would come out of it..
I was gradually winding up to become a graduate but not with my full chest as I had no clue of what the carryover course that I rewrote would be. I wrote my final exams, defended my project and was ready for my clearance. Again, ASUU (Academic staff union of universities)strike was declared, so shortlisting of names was on hold. During these times I had no rest of mind but I just hoped for the best..
Luckily, the strike didn't last long and before I knew it, the first clearance list of students who made were shortlisted.. A sight of my name was not seen馃ゲ
I was pushed to go sort the course out by doing whatever would be required of me.. All hope was lost at this time.
Soon enough, another list was released and I didn't even bother checking ..Only for me to check few weeks after and I discovered that my name was among the shortlisted students that made it馃帀馃コ馃ぉ馃拑
It felt like I was dreaming..I was taken by surprise馃ぉ
I started my clearance immediately and was done with it after few weeks. I celebrated the convocation ceremony with my course mates and was also posted to go serve my father land same time with others.
Till this moment, I still get amazed as to how I was able to scale through with a very good CGPA(Cumulative grade point average) admist my academic challenges.
Thank God I made It!
All pictures are mine..
