I’m surprised I did this many steps yesterday because I spent the whole day on the water in my kayak.
It was amazing! So cool!
My first challenging whitewater trip abroad on the River Sǒca and I loved every minute of it. The river is fast in places and mellow in others but it’s constantly flowing and there were a number of rapids to tackle, ranging from gentle to rather dramatic, to the point that you bounce across them, dipping each paddle into the water to maintain direction and stability. You find you use your body a great deal more than on flat water, in order to edge and counter balance.
I’ve a nemesis on this river and he’s a humongous boulder, very nearly took me out, drew me in like a magnet as I lost my line a little bit. I battled to stay left and found myself riding on the edge of my kayak, whilst pushing my upper body in the other direction and flipped the boat back upright, passing the rock and eddying out. I was in a state of shock that I didn’t capsize and paddled like mad to a safer spot.
The rest of our group were very impressed at the end of the day by how everyone got on. No disasters.
We had three paddle boarders, yes, sounds mad. Watching them travel down the rapids standing up is quite something. Very skilful.
The river is stunning. The blue colour is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
Sadly I’ve no photos or video of this. My friend Alex does though and I’ll share some of his footage another time.
