Xmas is over and we are putting away the decorations and unpacking some of the boxes form our house move.
My god there is some amount of crap in there.
Boxes and boxes of shit that we don't need or want. And that's before you get to the clothes.
None of it mine obviously as i'm a minimalist but there must be thousands of euros tied up in the wardrobes alone. The wardrobes and the attic as there are more clothes than we can even fit in the wardrobes.
It's madness to tie up so much money in clothes, shoes and ornaments.
If we had that money in cash there are so many differently ways to save it, invest it, clear our mortgage or just improve our lives in the long run instead of it sitting on shelves and inside of presses.
At what point do you say that i have the things i need and stop purchasing unecessary items??
This is more true than it ever was before in the global economy.
Everyday we are bombarded with ads and images of people living their best life. People with the latest gear and gadgets. People who have better lives than us normal people apperantly.
But I always look at purchases in terms of hours worked.
If you earn $160 a day after tax then ever hour of your hard work is worth $20.
That coat that you like. Is it worth 5 hours of hard work? Probably.
What if it's a big brand and the price is $1000 is it worth 50 hours of hard work? A full week of your life in return for a jacket with a logo on it....
I don't think so.
Then if you add up everything in your wardrobe how many weeks have you worked for clothes to sit on your rails.
It could be a full year.
I don't know about anybody else here but i would rather retire a year earlier than have shelves of clothes just sitting there.
If you invested all of that money instead of spending it and doubled it.
Two years of your life.
What's two years of your life worth in terms of cash??
Fine if you have millions in the bank and can afford to buy what you want without consequence but for most of us we are working to live. Working for a better life.
When I am retired at 50 with a solid passive revenue stream every year then i will be able to spend without thought but until then i value the power of money far more than what it can buy right now.
My time and my life is too valuable to waste it on stuff. Stuff that i don't need or want regardless of what instagram tells us.
It will be worth it in a few years to come.
