I suppose I have had many different path choices during my life. It is sort of hard to pick just one to write about. None of them really stand out as hard heart tugging choices. Maybe that because none of them seemed like 50/50 chances, after thinking the options through there was always a clear winner and I was happy to fail forward if it did not work out. Maybe coming from a pretty stable back ground and child hood made making the right choices easier.
Probably the biggest choice came early on at the end of high school trying to work out some sort of career. I was pretty lucky to have many possible career choices but that might have made it harder to pick the right path as well.
While at school I started working a number of casual and part time jobs. My mates were all hanging around smoking and causing trouble I was way more interested in trying to get some money and experience.
During school holidays I worked for a local landscape gardener. It was hot and hard labouring but I loved it, moving rocks, soil, digging plants in but it many lots of paving for our door area. He offered to take me on as an apprentice but I did not take it.
I also worked after school and the weekends at a big Supermarket chain. I was one of the longest service casuals. I started at the age of 14 and 3/4. Eventually they made me part time and offered me a cadetship as a trainee manager. I said no to that too and one of my mates got the job.
University did not really tempt me I was over school. I just kept applying for Electrical Apprenticeships even before I was old enough and finished high school.
I remember traveling all the way into town for an interview at a big company but the panel said I not old enough and need to finish school. As I got up to leave on of the interviewers that had said nothing piped in with "Make sure you try next year"
I did and got the job! I suppose looking back I always sort of knew deep down what I wanted or which path but I do often wonder what might have been if I had of chosen Landscape gardening or Supermarket managing.
