Thank you for welcoming me back to this beautiful community of book and literature lovers. Returning to this place is one of the things I enjoy most, as I believe it is one of the few places where I can talk to you about one of my great passions: reading. And speaking of passions, I bring with me one of the writers who fascinated me in my early youth: Octavio Paz, one of the Latin American writers who won the Nobel Prize.

You will agree with me that when we talk about Octavio Paz, we are talking about a complete poet and also a thinker who was responsible for dissecting Mexican society not only through the essay, but also through narrative and even drama. That is why I have chosen this small volume that contains these two fascinating facets of the author: Quicksand, written in the distant year of 1949, and Rappaccini's Daughter, which he wrote seven years later.

alt

To give you a brief preview: Quicksand is a story like an intimate descent into the self, while Rappaccini's Daughter is a play that shows the tragedy of a love condemned by the divine.

Quicksand is a first-person narrative, akin to an autobiography, in which the narrator, who I imagine is Paz himself, immerses himself in the memories of his childhood and youth. At times, it seems like a journey full of recurring images wrapped in a poetic and dense prose that gives the impression that instead of moving forward, it is slowly sinking us. Perhaps that is why the title is the perfect key, as memory and identity resemble quicksand that swallows us.

alt

Paz, as masterful as few others, sometimes gives the impression that he disintegrates in his narrative, becoming confused at the end of the story with the landscape and with nothingness, dissolving. The individual ends up evaporating, and only the awareness of his own absence remains.

After this abyss that I have described to you, and which will be even deeper when you decide to read it, we arrive at the garden. Yes, if Quicksand was introspection and lyrical prose, then Rappaccini's Daughter is conflict and dialogue. It is inspired by a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and what Paz does is transplant that reality from a gothic style to his own terrain, to Mexican soil.

alt

Beatriz, the daughter of the scientist Rappaccini, has been raised among poisonous plants until she becomes toxic herself, her breath and touch being deadly. It is more or less the metaphor of the perverted Garden of Eden, where there is great beauty and exuberance, but there is also that father who is at the same time a kind of God who has sacrificed his daughter for science.

As expected, Juan appears, a young student attracted by that forbidden beauty, and he crosses the threshold and becomes contaminated with Beatriz's poison. Everything goes well until the possibility of an antidote appears, and Juan's dilemma is marked between giving up Beatriz to save himself or accepting his fate of mortal love.

It is a fable, my friends, about love and freedom, a desolate metaphor of love as mutual and fatal poisoning.

alt

You will see then that we have gone from the abyss to the garden, from the garden to the abyss, as two faces offered to us by the Mexican Nobel laureate, thus revealing the multifaceted genius of this great writer. This small volume that I now hold in my hands shows the overwhelming versatility of the poet, who can dive into the depths of the unconscious, to the playwright full of conflicts, myths, and symbols.

alt

Two masterpieces, two ways of telling us that for Octavio Paz, the human condition is sometimes a path with no exit, as beautiful as it is lethal.

Until the next book!
