After the search for silence in the verses of Anna Akhmatova || Review [Eng/Esp]
I have the small fortune of having poets who accompany me every minute; they are like souls that never abandon me. One of the moments I felt most accompanied was when I held this book of poems by Anna Akhmatova for the first time. This is not just any book; it is a powerful object, a door to a world where pain is transformed into a sharp beauty that hurts and heals at the same time.
Choosing to read Akhmatova was a necessity, and I only realized it when a voice from those pages spoke to me of ruins, of my own absences, of that unnameable thing that lived in my chest. I found this book, and from the first page, I felt a whisper etched by fire, and I knew her voice was my own.
This anthology, with its wise selection, took me by the hand through the different seasons of her life and, by extension, those of the 20th century. Upon opening the first pages, the woman who speaks begins, one who takes love as a personal, intense, and sometimes cruel matter. I had no choice but to recognize myself in those loves that are battles, in that fragility dressed as iron.
Then comes Requiem, and this poem is not a simple read; it functions as an initiation. It was precisely there that the book ceased to be a mere object and became a sacred place. I sensed that Akhmatova was no longer speaking just for herself, but for all women, for those who stood in line in front of prisons with a package for a son, a husband, or a love that is now only a memory and a number: "And if ever in this country / they should plan to erect a monument to me, / let them not set it up by the sea where I was born: / my last link with the sea is broken."
Requiem is definitely not a poem to be enjoyed; it is a poem to be survived. In doing so, one feels the strange and terrible beauty of human resilience. Then, we inevitably encounter Poem Without a Hero, a labyrinth of echoes, memories, and ghosts that seem to dialogue. For me, this poem is a complex and even hermetic work that requires us to surrender to it without fear. Perhaps that is why I sometimes feel lost in its stanzas.
What moves me most about Akhmatova's poetry is its economy of words and resources. Here, there is none of the common grandiloquence of poets, nor an abundance of adjectives. I love her precise, almost spare language, as if words had to be rationed in times of famine. I would say that in this kind of poetry, everything is said even if it is not named.
Believe me, reading this anthology has required great effort on my part; it has not been a passive act. The verses of this poetess seem to interrogate you, and upon closing the book, her echo seems to remain, with that deep and serene voice that whispers in my own silences. Sometimes I think that these anthologies function as maps of the human soul in times of darkness, testaments that even when everything collapses, the word remains there to save us.
Please, approach the poetry of Anna Akhmatova. Each of her verses reminds us that beauty can be born from the darkest mud, that art is resistance, and that the noblest task is simply to remember, always to remember.
Until the next book!

VERSIรN EN ESPAรOL
