For fans of Taylor Swift this might be something wonderful to watch to get a full behind-the-scenes look at the life of the mega-star. For those that have no interest in her music it would be an obvious hard pass. For someone like me that is not a fan but also doesn't hate her music it was interesting enough.
It show the path that Tay-Tay had to travel down from being a relatively unknown singer and then rising to the point of being on the the biggest stars in the world. It showcases how so much of her life is handled by her managers and how she has in the past struggled to maintain an image of youthfulness and a skinny figure which lead to eating disorders (boo-hoo, right?)
One thing i really did enjoy was the fact that it sometimes presents her in a less than glamorous way. Without makeup and without bedazzled clothes, with her hair kinda messed up and just lying on the floor of an apartment somewhere watching TV.
I also didn't know that Taylor Swift is an accomplished musician. I guess this just shows my ignorance because I am generally not a fan of modern-day pop music so I just assumed that she has all of her songs given to her in the same fashion that Brittney Spears does. I would bet that to a certain degree this STILL happens but it was kind of nice to see her playing guitar and piano and hanging out in the studio with other musicians actually WRITING the music.
So I got converted a bit into liking the girl....except for the last part of the special which was probably the entire reason why Netflix got involved with the project in the first place: Because of Taylor's activism.
They spend a good 1/3 of the film focusing on Taylor being anti-conservative / Republican and specifically how she is anti-Trump. I dont know about you but I am sick and tired of celebrities lecturing us on how we are supposed to think politically and just because Taylor is pretty and seems to be a nice person doesn't change that. Her managers were trying to talk her out of it when one of them said to her "Taylor, imagine if we told you that we had this wonderful idea for you that would reduce the amount of people at your shows by 50%.... would that interest you?"
Even if you are not a fan of her work I think you would enjoy seeing into the life of a superstar. I know I did and since they didn't focus too much on the opulent life that she most likely leads, we don't have a chance to become envious :P
