The “frailejón” is a very special plant since it is adapted to one of the most extreme climatic conditions ecosystem: the “páramos” of high mountain. It stands extreme temperatures, high UV radiation and low humidity. Its scientific name is “Espeletia” and it is branched in many different species. It growths in the high altitude regions of Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. It has hairy leaves so that allow its adaptability to the extreme conditions, its growth is very slow only 1cm pre year. For this reason is protected by law in Venezuela. I do know if this is the situation in other countries.
El frailejón es una planta muy especial, está adaptada a uno de los ambientes más extremos del planeta: el páramo de alta montaña. Por lo que aguanta temperaturas extremas, alta radiación ultra violeta y poca humedad. Se da en las regiones mas altas de Venezuela, Colombia y Ecuador.
Su nombre científico es espeletia y está ramificada en muchas especies diferentes.
Tiene unas hojas felpudas las cuales permiten su extraordinaria adaptación, su crecimiento es extremadamente lento se dice que es de 1cm por año, por lo cual está protegido por ley en Venezuela, desconozco si en otros países también hay legislación parecida.
These photos were taken in Bogota (Colombia) at the top of the Monserrate Hill (located at near 3000 meters above the sea level. However they were planted in the gardens of park located there, so they are not wild plants.
The plants in this photo are different of the ones found in the Venezuelan Andes.
More than twenty years ago I visited the páramo in Venezuela at 4000 meters above sea level, and I saw there many of these plants in their natural environment. I have film (analog) photos of that opportunity, however I have not digitalized them.
The photos of this publication were taken with the camera of an iPhone 4 and edited in Gimp.
Las plantas de las fotos fueron tomadas en Bogotá (Colombia) en el cerro el Monserrate ubicado a 3000 metros sobre el nivel del mar, no eran “salvajes” ya que estaban en un jardín decorativo del parque.
Las plantas de la fotos son diferentes a las que se encuentran en los Andes venezolanos.
Hace más de veinte años visite el páramo de Venezuela a más de 4000 metros sobre el nivel del mar y vi muchas de estas plantas en su ambiente natural. Tengo fotos an películas (analógicas) de ellas, las cuales no he digitalizado.
