This weekend was exceptionally hot. Despite the heat I was searching for birds and I am glad I found some new ones along with regular ones.
Let me show you what my finds are.

Blue Tit

The Blue Tit is small bird with blue crown, blue on the wings, white cheeks, yellow underparts. The line that passes through the eyes is dark blue, but looks more like black on my photos. It gives the bird an angry look.

The blue tit is spread across Europe and it was also called Eurasian blue tit. It is funny to see it upside down on some branch, which I had before. This time the bird did not show its acrobatic skill.

Great Tit

In comparison to the Blue tit, the Great tit is slightly bigger. The black line goes through its chest and belly and the head is black.

Male and female can be easily recognized by that black line on their chest and belly. It is thinner by the females.

Spotted Flycatcher

The next bird is new for me. I could not recognize it and asked for help in BirdsinBulgaria Facebook group and I got immediate response. This is Spotted flycatcher.

This is bird hardly could be noticed. It lacks obvious features. Soon it will be gone like other migratory birds. The flycatcher will spend the winter in warmer places in Africa.

Dove

Next is dove watching from above and cooing.

Doves can be found everywhere in the world. There are so many species, probably hundreds. I don't know what kind of dove is this one, but I am going to find out.

Sparrow

Sparrows are so common that I often ignore them, but they can be quite interesting to observe and photograph. Here is one puffed sparrow, perching on a fence.

There are five different types of sparrows in Bulgaria. The ones living in the towns are very well adapted and like I said they are so common, that people may even not notice them. Disturbing fact is the decrease of their population for the last 10 years. Although I see more of them this year. However, volunteers throughout the country are involved into sparrow counting for fourth consecutive year. The idea is to determine the reason for this trend and analyze it. The initiative is held by the the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.

Red-backed Shrike

Still amazed by the bird who can be seen on top of tree or shrub looking for its prey.

The male with its grey head and black eye band watching carefully.

Later in the afternoon, near my home I saw this lovely female shrike.

What still amazes me is that in our urban area with small park, there is such variety of birds and I still find new species.
