reports that this morning an X-10 class solar flare has just left the sun and could hit earth. My understanding is that a strong enough X class solar flare can knock out the electric grid. If the electricity goes out due to a solar flare, the outage will be very widespread and normal lighting from ground sources will not interfere with star viewing. So, our view of the stars will suddenly be better than west Texas. We will see the milky way. Also, there will be northern lights. If all of that happens, the electric grid will be down long term.
It should take 2 - 3 days for the flare to hit earth.
