Title: From Excitement to Regret: My UPI Refund Scam Story

IndiaConnect fam,

We all use UPI daily for payments, right? So do scammers.

Last month I got a message on WhatsApp:
"Your Amazon refund of ₹1,499 is pending. Click here to receive it."

I had ordered something from Amazon 2 weeks back, so my brain went: "Oh yeah, that makes sense."

I clicked the link. It looked exactly like the Amazon app login page. I entered my UPI PIN to "verify" and confirm the refund.

30 seconds later, ₹3,000 was gone from my account.

What actually happened:

  1. The link was fake. It captured my UPI PIN and gave them access.
  2. Amazon never sends refund links on WhatsApp. Real refunds go back to your original payment method automatically.
  3. I was in a hurry and didn’t check the sender number. It was a random +91 number, not Amazon.

I reported it to the bank and cyber cell, but the money was gone. Lesson learned the hard way.

  3 rules I follow now:
  • Never click refund links on WhatsApp/SMS. Check the app directly.
  • Banks and Amazon will never ask for your UPI PIN to send you money.
  • If it feels urgent, it’s probably a scam. Scammers create fake urgency.
