Today, education does not end with the issuance of a school certificate. It does not end even with the issuance of a diploma (or diplomas, if there are several higher educations). Rather, from this moment everything is just beginning.
Life-long learning is a learning trend that people consciously devote their entire life to. The desire for lifelong education was predicted by Peter Drucker, the founder of the theory of modern management. The prerequisites for this are clear: the amount of information is every hour - and it must be processed in time. There are new requirements for specialists - for example, the ability to work with VR technologies and 3D printers.
Why else should we learn all our lives? What exactly to learn? And why start doing this right now?
New fields of activity
Is it worth mentioning the emergence of completely new professions? For example, it is now impossible to study targeting at a university - nevertheless, there are many online courses in which in 10-15 Skype sessions you will master a new area for yourself. In this sense, the Internet as a platform for education reacts to changes and trends much faster than a classical university. Possession of in-demand skills is a good trump card up your sleeve.
At home everywhere
You will never again have to sit at your usual desk or enter a stuffy classroom. Now you do not need to be physically present at the university or any other building: the whole process has moved to the digital world. If you wish, you can master anything without leaving your apartment in your favorite pajama pants. For example, the Coursera educational project offers a wide range of courses: here you can study data science, become a master in innovation, or understand the intricacies of Greek mythology.
Increased motivation
Companies are striving to create new educational platforms that are available 24/7 - for example, using the principles of gamification. They are open to all employees: this ensures the growth of self-motivation and involvement in the life of the company, as well as provides opportunities for continuous development.
To be the best
To be the best, you have to be competitive. In the modern world, this requires constant learning and development. New skills, professions, competencies. Due to the intensity of technology development, there is a high need for innovation-minded companies to constantly learn and “reinvent themselves”. This has already become the norm for people and companies claiming leadership positions, because the readiness to abandon what was your advantage yesterday, but has ceased to be relevant, has become the new norm today.
Flexible relationship
The relationship between employers and employees is becoming more flexible: outside specialists are invited to projects, freelancers carry out orders, and remote workers are generally a new reality in the world of work organization. One of the symbols of these changes is the employee relationship model that Uber has implemented as part of its taxi service, where the company's main asset is the technology platform, the cars do not belong to it, and the drivers are not tied to the company through traditional hiring relationships. Thus, the worker learns himself a new craft.
Soft skills
In the digital world, absolutely everything cannot be reduced to just digital or professional skills - soft skills are of great importance - behavioral skills of successful interaction with other people. In the modern economy and society, the importance of skills such as creativity, collaboration, empathy is increasing. Yes, a robot can be trained to perform complex operations - but only a living, thinking and feeling person is capable of giving out a creative idea. At least not yet 🙂
