Gossip is an American indie rock band formed by singer Beth Ditto, guitarist Brace Paine and drummer Hannah Blilie. They became known with the song Standing in the Way of Control. The singer's voice has been compared to Etta James, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. In 2001, Gossip released their first album That's Not What Heard, two years later came Movement in 2006 Standing in the Way of Control and in 2009 they released Music for Men .Unfortunately this group has been inactive since 2012, the year in which they released their last album A Joyful Noise. The greatest recognition to their music has been in Europe and Australia.
Here I present three tunes from the group:
1-. Standing in the Way of Control.
In Standing in the Way of Control from their third album they go for the fusion of the punk sound with disco music. The song is composed by Beth Ditto as a response to the position that the U.S. government had at that time on gay marriage during the presidency of George W. Bush.
The chorus was written to encourage people not to give up and fight for their principles.
Here is the song in a live performance on The Late Show with David Letterman.
2.- Heavy Cross.
In Heavy Cross, from his fourth album "Music for Men" (2009), highlights the mix of electronics, guitars, and especially the drums of Hannah Blilie. The song talks about how difficult it is to create something when only one person does it, the singer invites us to create with her but in a more risky way and not always go to the safe side.
3.- Move in the Right Direction.
Move in the Right Direction from their fifth album induces us not to look back, to overcome bad experiences and go in the right direction. Here the group mixes dance, pop music in a cheerful melody that stimulates full of optimism and strength.
I met this group through a radio program called Rockadencia, on radio 92.9, I heard Standing in the Way of Control and immediately looked for the song on youtube and surprise, the image of Beth Ditto was not what I expected, she is a fat girl, and also an advocate for the rights of the LGBT community. She is not the beautiful and stylish rock star, however she is very striking, full of vitality and undoubtedly the heart of this group that is still in suspense, for now Beth Ditto is trying her luck as a soloist and let me tell you that in the videos I have seen she does not disappoint at any time.
Thank you for allowing me to share these emblematic songs of this amazing group, and I invite you, if you have not already done so, to discover them, I assure you that you will not regret it.
A big salute to the creator of this initiative @ablaze
