South Georgia

The island of South Georgia, one of the main portals to Antarctica, was the inside for the tremendous Southern Ocean whaling industry from 1904 to 1966. A few imperative endeavors to Antarctica called at the whaling stations in transit to or from the mainland, quite those of Ernest Shackleton.

With its sharp, vigorously glaciated pinnacles, sickle formed South Georgia (170km long and 40km wide at its broadest) presents a rough appearance. The Allardyce Range shapes the island's spine. The most elevated point is Mt Paget (2934m), first rose in 1964. Icy masses cover 57% of the 3755-sq-km island.

Going to ships center around South Georgia's northeastern drift, with its numerous fjords and phenomenal natural life rearing shorelines. Because of the high mountains, this drift is shielded from the predominant westerlies, which is the reason the greater part of the whaling stations were based on this side of the island.
