THE ISLAND BORN FROM A CATASTROPHE

Imagine arriving in Santorini at the end of the afternoon. The sun begins to disappear over the Aegean Sea while white houses seem to hang from enormous volcanic cliffs. In front of you there is not simply a beautiful landscape. There is a story hidden beneath your feet. Because Santorini did not always look the way it does today.

Thousands of years ago, the centre of this ancient volcanic island was transformed by one of the greatest eruptions known from the Bronze Age. The enormous Thera eruption, which occurred during the second millennium BCE, radically changed the landscape and helped create the immense caldera that defines Santorini today. When you look toward the sea from Oia or Fira, you are essentially looking into the interior of that ancient volcanic structure. And then an unsettling question appears:

What happened to the people who lived here?

The answer can be found at Akrotiri.

Beneath a thick layer of volcanic ash, an entire Bronze Age settlement was buried. Streets, multi-storey buildings, everyday objects, sophisticated drainage systems and beautiful frescoes were preserved for centuries. Unlike many ancient settlements exposed to weather and decay, Akrotiri was covered by volcanic material and remarkably protected. Walking through its remains feels almost like looking at a photograph frozen in time. But the story did not end with that eruption.

The volcano continued creating land. At the centre of the caldera are Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, islands formed by later underwater eruptions. Nea Kameni still shows volcanic activity, with fumaroles releasing gases from deep inside the Earth.

Here, science becomes visible. The warmth in certain areas, the smell of sulfur and the dark volcanic rocks remind you that beneath this seemingly peaceful landscape there is still an active volcanic system.

Even the colours of Santorini's beaches tell part of the story. Black sand, reddish rocks and enormous volcanic cliffs are traces of different materials and geological processes. Perhaps that is why Santorini feels so mysterious.

It is beautiful. But its beauty was born from catastrophe. Its white villages stand on an island transformed by fire, magma, ash and the sea. When the sun disappears behind the caldera and the sky begins to change colour, the landscape may look almost perfect.

But beneath that beauty lies a much deeper story:

a vanished civilization, a volcano that transformed an island, and a planet that still holds fire beneath its surface.

If you ever visit Santorini, don't simply watch its famous sunset. Explore the caldera, visit Akrotiri and pay attention to the volcanic rocks. Once you understand what you are seeing, the landscape takes on an entirely different meaning.
