Psalm 39:1; I said, "I will guard my ways, lest i sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, while the wicked are before me.
The tongue is a very powerful instrument, it has the power to kill and to bring life to people. To talk you need your tongue. Aside the power of the tongue it is one of the most valuable assets in the mouth. Without it you cannot enjoy your meal or even eat, you will not be able to taste food and the world will not be as wonderful as it used to anymore in terms of aroma and nice foods. The tongue can be used to curse, praise, appreciate, emasculate, assist etc, all these function tells us that the tongue is indeed powerful so then what can we do to keep our tongue in check that we may not sin against God and ourselves.
We need to learn to control it, we need to tame the beast in our mouth and the best way to do that is to fill our souls with the Word of God. Unless we understand fully the power of the tongue, its mysteries and the damages it can bring us if we do not do right by it, we will not be able to keep it in check. As we read the holy spirit will fill us up and with his help we will be able to do what is right with our tongue that we may be lead into goodness.
