So I have been wanting to talk about this condition for a while now and I think today is a good day to share. My work allows me to come across different groups of people from varying backgrounds and with different professions and so there are some patterns that you tend to notice on a regular and one such pattern that presents to the eye clinic is this condition.
Yeah, I know the name sounds a bit scary and all, and one may start having the wildest of imaginations just from the name of the condition but before you start to panic, please continue with the read and learn from what I have to share because this condition tends to be more common than many know or realize and it is not as dangerous as it sounds and has a very simple remedy to it.
Eyelid Myokymia/Eyelid Twitch
Just as its alternate name suggests, this condition results in spontaneous contractions of the eyelid which results in the lid twitching. It is more common with the lower lid as compared to the upper lid and most often than not it tends to resolve itself within a short while. It may affect one or both eyes but normally it does affect one at a time.
The condition may last from a few seconds to a few minutes to days or even weeks. You do not need to be sick or have any underlying conditions to experience this, it happens irrespective however it is mostly associated with exhaustion or tiredness, stress, anxiety, and excess caffeine intake.
And so what you may realize in the pattern of patients who present to the clinic with this condition is that they hardly get enough sleep, they are either sleep deprived due to work or other stuff, they go to work very late and wake up too early, they are mostly getting less than 6 hours of sleep and be taking supplements in hopes to catering for the lost sleep hours.
The advice I normally give my patients is the same advice I am going to give you as a reader, perhaps having reached this point of the reading you may have realized that you are a victim of myokymia, the solution is quite simple, do well to get enough sleep for yourself, get enough rest at least 6 hours within the 24 hours and ensure that you eat healthily and exercise a bit.
Cut out or reduce whichever stress markers may be going on in your life and try to meditate if need be, stay hydrated, and drink copious amounts of water, you have to make a conscious effort about this, once you put these simple parameters into work you will realize that things will quickly improve for you, not just the twitch but your general health and well-being.
Conclusion
So the next time you start experiencing this just know that you are probably over-exerting yourself, high chance of being sleep deprived or you being anxious about something. Just as the saying goes, knowing the problem is half the problem solved and so now that you know this, make good use of the knowledge.
Let me hasten to add that this is not a self-medication post, please do well to visit your primary eyecare practitioner whenever you experience anything regarding it, when in doubt please consult a professional. It was a pleasure serving you and thanks for reading.
