So today, am going to talk brieflly about the condition called gluacoma. It would seem that almost all eye health personnel are almost always about glaucoma awareness, there is glaucoma day celebration and glaucoma week celebrations internationally all in an attempto to conscientize people about the condition, we do this not for the fun of it but because the condition is sight menacing and is causing lots and lots of people to loss their sight each and everyday.

So what is Glaucoma? It is an ocular condition that comes along with characteristic appearances on your retina and sometimes together with raise intra-ocular pressure. I say sometimes because whiles lot of high IOPs are associated with gluacoma one may also be suffering from ocular hypertension or may have normal tension glaucoma without and impression from the pressure.

What makes this condition deadly? The deadly aspect of glaucoma is the fact that it can claim your sight and worse part of it is that it does not give of any symptom to warm the patient. One gradually loss the visual field or the area to which they may be able to see until the point is reached where everything is gone. Now with binocular vision or vision with the two eyes the other eye may easily overlap and keep one from noticing these changes if the condition happen to be on only one eye. Another aspect to why it is deadly is the fact that there is no cure, the condition can only be managed and damage caused cannot be reversed.

How do i protect myself from losing my sight? There only way to keep glaucoma from claiming your sight is with early detection. And the only indication that may prompt your optometrist to suspect the condition is through tests which are done on routine examination. So, what you need to do is to visit your optometrist at least once every 6 months for check up, this way should the condition begin it may be detected quite early and more done to help you

Does that mean am going to be on drugs forever? The answer is yes because the condition as it stand now can only be managed but there are certain things that can be done at certain points in time to help take you off drugs. Some of these things include surgery to ease the pressure in the eye, however this mostly done for the young and not the aged. Do not worry your optometrist will discuss your options with you.
