Hello, anime fans. We’re continuing with this special quarterly section where I bring you the best of the best when it comes to animated series. This time, we’re going to talk about fantasy anime—a genre so popular these days that it’s hard not to find it on any list, especially in the anime industry, where it has become quite popular. However, I won’t be talking about the same old generic anime here; instead, I’m bringing you five gems of the genre that might pique the interest of more than a few of you.
Once again, I’d like to remind you that these “TOP” lists are each dedicated solely to a specific genre. I personally choose the ones I think are the best and share my opinion on each one, explaining why I added them to this list. I rate each anime on a scale of 1 to 10, and we’ll start with the anime with the lowest rating and end with the one with the highest. Everything you’ll read here is solely my own opinion, so if you’re looking for a personal list of anime in your favorite genre, I invite you to stick around until the end.

Yo escojo personalmente los que yo pienso que son los mejores y doy mi opinión de cada uno y por qué los agregué a esta lista. Cada anime lo califico del 1 al 10, además de que empezamos hablando con el anime de menor calificación y terminamos con el de mayor calificación. The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects
Let’s start off on a relaxed note with one of this season’s most underrated fantasy anime, thanks to how different its plot is from most others in the genre, which tend to just repeat the same old formula. It’s a story brimming with romance, character development, and plenty of responsibilities. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Fuurou and illustrated by Kinta, this anime was produced by studio42. The anime tells the story of Dias, a warrior who distinguished himself in battle and earned the title of “hero”; as a reward, the king grants him some supposedly uninhabitable lands.
This was one of the first fantasy animes this season that really caught my attention. The main reason for this is its premise, which is different from the typical “hero’s journey” story that the industry has already exploited to death in recent years with generic, low-budget fantasy animes. Here, the protagonist (Dias) is already a proclaimed hero who is now becoming a lord and is sent to some remote and seemingly desolate lands where he is supposed to remain and reign for the rest of his life.

Una historia repleta de romance, desarrollo y muchas responsabilidades. Este fue uno de los primeros animes de fantasía que me llamaron mucho la atención en esta temporada. La razón principal de esto se debe a su premisa, la cual es distinta a la típica historia del “camino del héroe” que ya está industria la explotaron hasta el cansancio en estos últimos años con animes de fantasía genéricos y de bajo presupuesto. Aquí el protagonista (Dias) ya es un héroe proclamado que ahora se convierte en señor y es enviado a unas tierras remotas y aparentemente desoladas donde se supone que tendrá que quedarse a reinar por el resto de su vida.

That's right—instead of being the story of a young protagonist who sets out to become a hero, it's actually the story of a hero who becomes the lord of lands inhabited by Onis and other kinds of creatures. The story might not be all that appealing to teenagers who are just looking for action and flashy visual effects. But if you’re into watching a simple warrior become the lord of a territory, a responsible husband, a loving father, and an exemplary leader, then you’ve come to the right place. The anime blends fantasy with comedy, romance, and action very well without ever wearing the audience out.
Another thing I like is the way they introduce and develop most of their characters, without ever neglecting any of them. The audiovisual aspects are also noteworthy—I’m referring especially to the character designs. Personally, I really like Alna’s character design; she became my favorite character from the moment she first appeared. The animation is decent, with attention to detail and a consistently varied color palette. The sound effects aren’t bad either, and the same goes for this anime’s soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a rating of 7.5/10 in terms of the fantasy, action, and comedy genres.
Así es, en vez de ser la historia de un joven protagonista que busca convertirse en héroe, es en realidad la historia de un héroe que se convierte en el señor de unas tierras habitadas por Onis y otros tipos de criaturas. La historia puede que no tenga todo el atractivo para cualquier adolescente que solo busca ver acción y efectos visuales coloridos. Pero si lo tuyo es ver cómo un simple guerrero se convierte en señor de un territorio, un esposo responsable, un padre cariñoso y un líder ejemplar entonces estás en el lugar perfecto. El anime mezcla muy bien la fantasía con la comedia, el romance y la acción sin llegar a agotar a la audiencia.
Otra cosa que me gusta también es la forma en la que presentan y desarrollan a la mayoría de sus personajes, sin llegar a descuidar a ninguno en ningún momento. También tenemos su apartado audiovisual el cual también tiene lo suyo, lo digo sobre todo por el diseño de los personajes. Personalmente me agrada mucho el diseño del personaje de Alna quien desde su primera aparición se convirtió en mi personaje favorito. La animación es decente, sin descuidar los detalles y siempre usando una paleta variada de colores. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, al igual que ocurre con la banda sonora de este anime.
Personalmente le doy una calificación de 7.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, acción y comedia.

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman (Season 2)
We’re continuing with fantasy anime featuring elderly protagonists, and what better way to do so than with the return of a series that entertained me so much last year. The story continues with the turbulent life of a master swordsman trying to live in peace in the great capital. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Shigeru Sagazaki and illustrated by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima, this anime was produced by Passione and Hayabusa Film. In this second season, our protagonist Beryl Gardinant returns as he continues teaching in the capital, where he tries—unsuccessfully—to live a trouble-free life.
It’s not one of the best fantasy animes I’ve ever seen—not by a long shot—but its unique premise and story give it that special touch that makes it more interesting than most generic fantasy animes. I’ve already talked about this anime in a previous review and made it clear what I came to like about it. While it features action and all the elements of fantasy, the series balances them very well with comedy and its quiet, relaxing moments. However, in this second season, we get more action-packed moments, more battles, and a more notable character development for our protagonist.
Continuamos con animes de fantasía con protagonistas de tercera edad y qué mejor forma de hacerlo que con el regreso de una obra que me entretuvo mucho el año pasado. La continuación de la intranquila vida de un maestro espadachín que intenta vivir en paz en la gran capital. Basada en la serie de novelas ligeras homónimas escritas por Shigeru Sagazaki e ilustradas por Tetsuhiro Nabeshima, este anime fue producido por Passione y Hayabusa Film. En esta segunda temporada tenemos de regreso a nuestro protagonista Beryl Gardinant quien continúa dando clases en la capital, donde intenta sin éxito vivir una vida libre de problemas.
No es de los mejores animes de fantasía que he visto en mi vida, ni de lejos, pero su distintivo en cuanto a su premisa e historia le da ese toque especial que lo hace más interesante que la mayoría de animes genéricos de fantasía. Ya les he hablado de este anime en una reseña pasada y les dejé claro lo que me llegó gustar de este anime. Si bien tiene acción y todo el apartado de fantasía, la obra lo equilibra muy bien con el tema de la comedia y los momentos tranquilos o relajantes que posee la misma. Sin embargo, en esta segunda temporada podemos encontrarnos con más momentos de acción, más batallas y un desarrollo más notable de nuestro protagonista.

Questions answered, unforgettable showdowns, and some pretty dangerous enemies. This new season has all that and more, along with a great cast of characters who never fade into the background—quite the opposite, in fact. It may not have the best character development ever or the best battles we’ll see this season, but at least it manages to strike a perfect balance that’s quite entertaining. I was surprised to learn that this anime is actually a seinen series, which explains quite well why it has a somewhat more mature tone and a plot very different from what we’re used to seeing in this genre.
The animation, by the way, is also very well done, even managing to surpass the previous season to some extent—albeit only slightly—in certain action scenes. Otherwise, the character designs, the varied grayish color palette, and the use of light and shadow in this anime are excellent. It may not have spectacular fluidity, but it maintains a perfect balance between traditional and computer-generated animation, which blends together very seamlessly. The sound effects aren’t bad either, especially during the battles, and the soundtrack also does its part to build excitement at every moment.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the fantasy and action genres are concerned.
Dudas resueltas, enfrentamientos inolvidables y enemigos bastante peligrosos. Todo esto y más posee esta nueva temporada, junto con un buen grupo de personajes que no son olvidados en ningún momento, sino todo lo contrario. No tendrá el mejor desarrollo de personaje de toda la historia ni las mejores batallas que podemos encontrarnos en esta temporada, pero al menos logra mantener un equilibrio perfecto que entretiene bastante. Me sorprendió saber que este anime es en realidad un Seinen, lo cual explica bastante bien el por qué posee cierto tono más maduro y una trama muy diferente a la que estamos acostumbrados a ver en este género.
La animación, por cierto, también se mantiene muy bien, logrando incluso superar en cierta medida a la temporada anterior con muy poco en algunas escenas de acción. De resto, tanto los diseños de los personajes, la paleta grisácea y variada de colores y el uso de luces y sombras en este anime son excelentes. No tendrá una fluidez espectacular, pero mantiene un equilibrio perfecto entre la animación tradicional y la animación hecha por computadora que logran disimular muy bien. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están tan mal, sobre todo en las batallas y la banda sonora cumple también con lo suyo de generar emoción en cada momento.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía y acción.

Goodbye, Lara
Let’s skip a couple of steps and dive into classic fantasy with the next anime, which is, for me, one of the biggest surprises this past summer season has brought us. A priceless gem of modern animation, along with a very Asian take on a classic and hugely popular story. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale “The Little Mermaid,” Goodbye, Lara is an original anime created by the studio Kinema Citrus. The anime tells the story of Lara, a mermaid and daughter of the King of the Sea, who has been curious about what lies beyond the ocean ever since she was very young.
That’s right—the famous story of “The Little Mermaid” now has its own anime adaptation, and it’s A MILLION times better than the Disney version we all know (both the classic one and the live-action adaptation with its forced inclusivity). I’m telling you, it’s excellent—and I’m not just saying that because I’m a fan of the original story, which, to be honest, I’m not. I’m saying it because it’s true—at least for me—since from its very first, unforgettable episode, we can tell that it’s not the same story we know. Yes, it starts off similarly and all, but then it turns into a completely different story with certain tones so dark and heavy that they’re hard to ignore.
Saltamos un par de escalones y nos vamos a la fantasía clásica con el siguiente anime que es, para mí, una de las sorpresas más grandes que nos ha traído esta última temporada de verano. Una joya invaluable de la animación moderna junto con una versión muy oriental de una obra clásica y muy popular. Basada en el clásico cuento de “La Sirenita” de Hanz Christian Andersen, Goodbye, Lara es un anime original creado por el estudio Kinema Citrus. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Lara, una sirena e hija del Rey del Mar quien desde muy pequeña ha sentido curiosidad por lo que hay más allá del océano.
Así es, la famosa historia de “La Sirenita” tiene ahora su versión anime y es UN MILLÓN de veces mejor que la versión que todos conocemos de Disney (tanto la clásica como el Live Action con inclusión forzada). Ya les digo yo que es excelente y no lo digo porque sea fan de la historia original, cosa que no lo soy, la verdad. Lo digo porque es así, al menos para mí ya que desde su primer e inolvidable episodio podemos darnos cuenta de que no es la misma historia que nosotros conocemos. Si, empieza de forma similar y todo, pero luego se convierte en una historia completamente distinta y con ciertos tonos tan oscuros y densos que es difícil de ignorar.

If there’s one thing Japan does well, it’s using classic stories to create masterpieces that are packed with all kinds of emotions and themes that blow your mind—and Goodbye, Lara is no exception. The constant search for “true love”—what that means, what sets humanity apart from every other species, what Lara truly desires—all of this and more will have you thinking deeply as you get hooked on its complete and perfect story from start to finish. It’s not a story with a happy ending, nor does it have that “family-friendly” tone that Disney has spoiled us with since we were little—none of that. It’s a raw story, brimming with emotions, dreams, traumas, love, hate, and all kinds of iconic and unforgettable characters.
There are no heroes or villains, just beings trying to survive in a world plagued by selfishness and evil that seeks distinction where none exists. The animation is also its strongest point, balancing everything like a Slice of Life story with a touch of romance, plenty of drama, and fantasy in a style all its own. The fluidity, the art style, the character design, the level of detail, the camera work, the excellent use of light and shadow, and so on. Even the sound effects are fascinating, as is the soundtrack. In short, this is an anime I highly recommend watching.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in the fantasy, drama, and romance genres.
Si algo hace bien Japón es que saben utilizar historias clásicas para crear obras maestras donde inyectan todo tipo de emociones y temas que te revientan la cabeza y Goodbye, Lara no es la excepción. La constante búsqueda del “verdadero amor”, lo que esto significa, lo que diferencia a la humanidad de cualquier otra especie, lo que Lara desea en realidad, todo esto y más cosas que te ponen a pensar mientras te enganchas con su historia completa y perfecta de principio a fin. No es una historia con un final feliz ni tampoco tiene ese tono “family friendly” que nos mal-acostumbró Disney desde pequeños, nada de eso. Es una historia cruda, repleta de emociones, sueños, traumas, amores, odios y todo tipo de personajes emblemáticos e inolvidables.
No hay héroes ni villanos, solo seres que buscan sobrevivir en un mundo plagado de egoísmo y maldad que busca distinción en donde no lo hay. La animación es también su punto más fuerte, equilibrando todo como un Slice of Life con algo de romance, mucho drama y fantasía de una manera única en su estilo. La fluidez, el estilo de dibujo, el diseño de los personajes, el nivel de detalles, los planos, el uso excelente de luces y sombras, etc. Incluso los efectos de sonido son fascinantes, al igual que sucede con la banda sonora que tiene. En fin, este es un anime que sí te recomiendo ver.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, drama y romance.

Clevatess (Season 2)
We return one last time to action and fantasy with the return of another great anime that I really enjoyed last year. An invaluable and underrated gem that reignited my love for this genre. The story of the undead heroine and the King of Beasts continues, with more surprises and action in store for us. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Yūji Iwahara, Clevatess is produced by the Lay-duce studio. This second season opens with Alicia being attacked by a group of giant spiders while a tower materializes out of thin air in the middle of a pond right in front of a school full of young sorcerers.
I think those who’ve been following me for a while already know how much I loved this anime back when I watched its first season as it aired. The dark, uncensored tone, the characters, the story, and the unforgettable battles it features are among the best. That’s why, when I found out after the first season ended that there would be a second season, I was really excited by the news. Now, with just one episode left to air in the second season, I can confirm that this series manages to maintain both the pace and the level of quality and epicness it offered us from the very beginning. It’s just that, of course, the story takes a few twists here that make it feel very different.
Volvemos una última vez a la acción y la fantasía con el regreso de otro gran anime que llegué a disfrutar bastante el año pasado. Una joya invaluable e infravalorada que me devolvió ese amor que le tengo a este género. La historia de la heroína no-muerta y el rey de las bestias continúa con más sorpresas y acción para darnos. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada Yūji Iwahara, Clevatess es producida por el estudio Lay-duce. Esta segunda temporada inicia mostrándonos a Alicia siendo atacada por un grupo de arañas gigantes mientras una torre se forma de la nada en medio de un estanque de agua justo en frente de una escuela repleta de jóvenes hechiceros.
Creo que los que me siguen desde hace tiempo ya sabrán lo mucho que me encantó este anime en su momento cuando vi en emisión su primera temporada. El tono oscuro y sin censura, los personajes, la historia y las batallas inolvidables que tiene son de lo mejor. Es por eso que al enterarme luego de haber finalizado que habría una segunda temporada me emocionó bastante la noticia. Ahora, con solo un episodio pendiente por ser emitido de su segunda temporada, puedo confirmar que esta obra logra mantener tanto el ritmo como el nivel de calidad y epicidad que nos ofrecía desde un principio. Solo que, claro, la historia llega a dar unos cuantos giros aquí que se siente muy diferente.

What initially seemed to be the journey of a former heroine, a king of beasts, and a baby prince ended up turning into a power struggle and an attempt to destroy this world to “return it to its origins.” At least the main antagonist of this second season has a backstory worth paying attention to, since we learn a little about the world’s past. It’s intriguing what we’re shown at the end, but at the same time, it’s a bit disappointing how certain points or questions about that past are glossed over sooner than we’d expect based on what we saw in the first episode.
The anime has its own charm; it’s entertaining, with a touch of humor and drama, and plenty of action to offer. There are new characters, and this fantasy world manages to expand a bit—though not quite enough. As for the animation, Clevatess maintains the high standard it set in the previous season right through to the very last episode. It has a level of fluidity and detail in certain battles that’s impossible to ignore, and the character designs are also very well done—at least for the most part. The gore and censorship haven’t been toned down, but I was hoping for a bit more. The sound effects are excellent, as is the soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in the dark fantasy and action genre.
Lo que en su momento parecía ser el viaje de una ex-heroína, un rey de las bestias y un bebé príncipe terminó convirtiéndose en una lucha de poder y un intento de destruir este mundo para “regresarlo a sus orígenes”. Al menos el antagonista principal de esta segunda temporada tiene un desarrollo que vale la pena prestarle atención ya que conocemos un poco del pasado de dicho mundo. Es curioso todo lo que nos muestra al final, pero al mismo tiempo termina siendo un poco decepcionante la forma en la que se reducen algunos puntos o cuestiones sobre dicho pasado antes de lo que llegamos a ver desde el primer episodio.
El anime tiene lo suyo, entretiene, tiene su toque de humor y drama y mucha acción para ofrecernos. Hay nuevos personajes y este mundo fantástico logra expandirse un poco, aunque no lo suficiente. En cuanto a su animación, Clevatess mantiene ese nivel que en la temporada anterior logró ofrecernos hasta su último episodio. Tiene un nivel de fluidez y detalles en ciertas batallas que es imposible de ignorar y el diseño de los personajes también se mantienen muy bien, al menos en su mayoría. El gore y la censura no se redujeron, pero espero algo más. Los efectos de sonido son excelentes, al igual que la banda sonora.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía oscura y acción.

A very, very underrated anime, despite having a fantastic story and characters that are simply unforgettable. An anime that makes you laugh, scream, get annoyed, and even cry over a few simple, chatty magical cats. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Amara and illustrated by Mai Ōkuma, this anime was produced by OLM studio. The anime tells the story of a dragon who, since birth, was raised by a magical cat along with her kittens in a cave deep in the forest.
Llegamos al final de este TOP con lo mejor que les puedo ofrecer personalmente en lo que respecta a fantasía de esta última temporada de verano. Un anime muy, pero que muy infravalorado a pesar de tener una historia fantástica y personajes que son simplemente inolvidables. Un anime que te hace reír, gritar, molestar y hasta llorar por unos simples gatos mágicos y parlanchines. I’m not exaggerating when I say this and place this anime gem at the top of this list—it’s an anime that has everything anyone tired of the typical, generic stories of heroes and adventurers in this industry could want. The spotlight here is on the cats—those raised by the great red dragon, who was himself raised by a cat and now defends them in this medieval, fantastical world.

Lo que aparenta ser una simple y tierna historia de un pequeño dragón que vive con gatos mágicos en un bosque, termina convirtiéndose en una de las mejores historias de fantasía, comedia, aventura y drama que habrás visto en toda tu vida. No exagero cuando digo esto y coloco esta joya de anime en el primer puesto de este TOP, es un anime que tiene todo lo que busca cualquiera que esté cansado de las típicas historias genéricas de héroes y aventureros que hay en esta industria. El protagonismo aquí se lo llevan los gatos, esos que son criados por el gran dragón rojo que también se crió por una gata y que ahora los defiende en este mundo medieval y fantástico.
El anime no se rige por una sola historia lineal, sino que es la combinación de una serie de historias cortas que logran interconectarse tan bien que es fácil de seguir y entretenerse con cada una. Algunas historias te harán reír, otras te fascinarán y una que otra te harán llorar. Esto sucede debido a la variedad de temas profundos y emotivos que trata este anime de gatos mágicos, sí. Su animación también es fascinante, manteniendo un mínimo de detalles con un estilo de dibujo y animación que va muy bien para la historia y los personajes gatunos que vemos aquí. La paleta clara y suave de colores, la fluidez, los efectos visuales y de sonido. Hasta la banda sonora es de lo más memorable.
Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía.
