The film opens on a train bound for Chicago. There we see a man who wakes up completely disoriented while a girl sitting in front of him is talking to him. He claims to be a captain and pilot in the U.S. Army and that his last memory was that he was on his way to a mission in Afghanistan. She thinks he is joking and asks him if he is all right, to which he goes to the bathroom where he realizes he has another face that is not his when he looks in the mirror. He also looks at his ID and realizes his name is Sean Fentress, a history teacher and not the Captain Colter Stevens he thinks he is. As he comes out of the bathroom he meets the same girl again, named Christina Warren, who tells him that everything will be fine, to which suddenly the train explodes just as another train passes him. Then, our captain and protagonist wakes up, but not before seeing certain distorted visions, and then finding himself inside a bunker with screens in front of him. No wonder I know this film so well, as well as the excellent acting work done by the actors who participated in it and the level of quality in terms of visual effects, production, cameras and soundtrack. Even to this day I consider it a jewel of science fiction cinema, since what can be seen in this film is something that, although it may be similar to other time loops or alternative worlds, this one tries to offer us a more introspective and profound vision of what the protagonist can feel and live when being part of a mission that will affect his way of seeing reality and time as he really perceives it. Not to mention issues such as terrorism or the way in which the government comes to respond to such attacks with technologies that the world is unaware of. Without a doubt, this movie is worth seeing, especially if you are a fan of the genre.

No es de extra帽ar que conozca tan bien esta pel铆cula, as铆 como el excelente trabajo de actuaci贸n que realizaron los actores que participaron en ella y el nivel de calidad en cuanto a efectos visuales, producci贸n, c谩maras y banda sonora. A煤n al d铆a de hoy la considero una joya del cine de ciencia ficci贸n, ya que lo que se puede ver en esta cinta es algo que, si bien puede ser similar a otras otras de bucles en el tiempo o mundos alternativos, esta intenta ofrecernos una visi贸n un tanto m谩s introspectiva y profunda de lo que puede llegar a sentir y vivir el protagonista al ser parte de una misi贸n que le afectar谩 su forma de ver la realidad y el tiempo tal y como lo percibe realmente. Eso, sin mencionar temas como el terrorismo o la forma en la que el gobierno llega a responder ante dichos ataques con tecnolog铆as que el mundo desconoce. Starting with the story we are told, I really like the disturbing way it begins; with a man completely disoriented as to where he is, what day it is and who he is with. All this only to realize minutes later that he is not himself, but someone else, another body with another name. The best part is the way this scene ends, with an explosion, turning everything around him and even himself to ashes, just as his mind and perception has turned to ashes with such a distorted revelation of his reality. After such a traumatic experience, it is normal for him to find himself disoriented once again, not knowing where he is and who he is talking to while what he can see is a screen in the middle of a bunker in which he is locked in. The lady talking to him on the other side of the screen reminds him that he is now in the middle of a very important mission, a mission that puts the lives of many people at risk and demands that he try to find the origin of the train explosion and who detonated it.
With such a unique premise it is only natural that anyone would be intrigued by what happens next. The way it is constructed, with visions, places, people and objects repeating, as if the protagonist were in the middle of an infinite loop is typical of this type of time travel films. Although, an interesting detail regarding this is that -as the movie itself tries to explain to us in a poor way- what really happens is not a jump in time to a past that can be changed (as it happens in other time travel movies that we have already talked about in previous occasions), but it is a kind of alternate virtual simulation in which only 8 minutes of what happened in that precise place and with the precise data of the people and their environment at that moment are recreated. Whatever is altered or modified from that time or moment will affect the future or present in which they are currently. However, with the ending that this movie gives us, which I consider to be one of the best endings I have seen, this can be considered as a jump in time to an alternate world, similar to the main line, but with changes and a very different course.

Despu茅s de esta experiencia tan traum谩tica, es normal que se encuentre desorientado una vez m谩s, sin saber en d贸nde est谩 y con qui茅n est谩 hablando mientras lo que puede ver es una pantalla en medio de un b煤nker en el que se encuentra encerrado. Aunque, un detalle interesante respecto a esto es que -como la misma pel铆cula nos intenta explicar de forma pobre- lo que sucede realmente no es un salto en el tiempo a un pasado que puede ser cambiado (como sucede en otras pel铆culas de viajes en el tiempo que ya hemos hablado en ocasiones anteriores), sino que es una especie de simulaci贸n virtual alterna en la cual se recrean solo 8 minutos de lo que sucedi贸 en ese preciso lugar y con los datos precisos de las personas y su entorno en ese momento. Sea lo que sea que se altere o modifique de ese tiempo o momento o afectar谩 el futuro o presente en el cual se encuentran actualmente. Sin embargo, con el final que nos da esta pel铆cula, la cual considero que es de los mejores finales que he visto, se puede considerar esto como un salto en el tiempo a un mundo alternativo, similar al de la l铆nea principal, pero con cambios y un rumbo muy diferente.
Regardless of how accurate or logical all of this may or may not be, this film delivers on telling a well-crafted story in terms of drama, suspense, mystery and action. With plot twists, character development, revelations and denouements that are most rewarding. Watching the protagonist, a captain in the U.S. forces get involved in such a complex mission in which his perception of reality is constantly altered as he manages to find the culprit of what appears to be a terrorist attack is both typical (for a U.S. film) and complicated to digest. The first few times I saw this movie I didn't understand many of the details explained in it, besides its ending, which still managed to make quite an impact, anyway. In terms of character development I must admit that Jake Gyllenhaal does an excellent job playing and developing a role as complicated to play as the protagonist. Not to mention the relationships he makes, the moments and the excellent ending this movie has.
Another detail that caught my attention this last time I saw this movie was the lessons that this great story tries to convey. It's like the question the main character repeatedly asks the girl he sits across from on the train: If you had one minute to live, what would you do? Not surprisingly, as we watch what appears to be a sequence of actions leading to the stopping of a terrorist act that would end the lives of millions of people; what we see next is clearly the flip side of this. If we knew that we had little time left to live, that tomorrow we were going to die, what would we do about it? Would we look for a way to survive longer or would we take advantage of every minute to live life to the fullest? This is the question that this movie leaves us with at the end, which beyond being a simple movie of exploding trains or captains traveling to the past in an alternative virtual world very similar to the real world; it is a story of love and moments both good and bad that completely define how fleeting our lives are.

Ver al protagonista, un capit谩n de las fuerzas estadounidenses envolverse en una misi贸n tan compleja en la que su percepci贸n de la realidad se altera constantemente mientras consigue encontrar al culpable de lo que parece ser un ataque terrorista es de lo m谩s t铆pico (para una pel铆cula de Estados Unidos) y a la vez complicado de digerir. Las primeras veces que v铆 esta pel铆cula no llegu茅 a entender muchos detalles que se explican en ella, adem谩s de su final, la cual a煤n as铆 logr贸 impactar bastante, igualmente. Otro detalle que me llam贸 la atenci贸n esta 煤ltima vez que v铆 esta pel铆cula fueron las lecciones que intenta transmitir esta grandiosa historia. Es como la pregunta que repetidas veces le hace el protagonista a la chica con la que se sienta enfrente en el tren: Si tuvieras un minuto de vida, 驴qu茅 es lo que har铆as? No es de extra帽ar que al ver lo que parece ser una secuencia de acciones que desembocan en la detenci贸n de un acto terrorista que acabar铆a con la vida de millones de personas; lo que vemos despu茅s es claramente el lado contrario a esto. Si supi茅ramos que nos queda poco tiempo de vida, que el d铆a de ma帽ana vamos a morir, 驴qu茅 es lo que har铆amos al respecto? 驴Buscar铆amos la forma de sobrevivir m谩s tiempo o aprovecharemos cada minuto para vivir la vida al m谩ximo? Esta es la inc贸gnita que nos deja esta pel铆cula al final, la cual m谩s all谩 de ser una simple pel铆cula de trenes explotando o capitanes viajando al pasado en un mundo virtual alternativo muy similar al mundo real; es una historia de amor y momentos tanto buenos como malos que definen por completo lo pasajeras que son nuestras vidas.

And I'm not only saying that because of its visual section, with that mix of flashbacks with transitions and camera positions in retrospective, sequential or panoramic movement. We must also accept the excellent work with the use of visual effects, explosions, color palette and the use of slow motion. Even the sound effects work is very remarkable in this case by having a sequence of sound effects that we hear repeated each time during the film with very good precision. The soundtrack, for its part, is also well done, with melodies that generate impression, emotion or impact in the most precious moments of the film. One detail I like is the visual representation of the bunker in which the protagonist finds himself throughout the story and what this represents mentally and emotionally with its changes in shape and temperature. All in all, this movie is perfect for any fan of the sci-fi genre who is looking for something unique and special to watch.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the sci-fi/suspense genre is concerned.

Y no solo lo digo por su apartado visual, con esa mezcla de flashbacks con transiciones y posiciones de c谩maras en retrospectiva, en movimiento secuencial o panor谩mico. Tambi茅n hay que aceptar el excelente trabajo con el uso de los efectos visuales, las explosiones, la paleta de colores y el uso de c谩maras lentas.
