Today was one of the worst days I've experienced since taking over daytime watching over my grandmother. I won't give too many details but lets just say a nurse practitioner had to swing by for a test and she has a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection again). To make matter worse her ability to follow directions and verbally communicate is spotty at best. Last night I was awoken several times to uncontrollable fits of crying without having much success at getting her to calm down. She also is refusing to keep her depends on and thus is having accidents especially during the night.
My family and I are now beginning the discussion of placing her into a nursing home. We swore to her we wouldn't do it but honestly the dementia is getting to the point I can't handle her when she doesn't cooperate and I fear this is going to be a slippery slope of decline based on the last 2 weeks observing her. Even the nurse practitioner made the suggestion along with the tailing social worker. We'll continue to discuss the pros and cons about this decision as we've never had to decide something like this before. I was a little on edge when they asked her some questions today because in the back of my mind I'm wondering are they trying to lay the groundwork for some type of form or writ saying she's not of sound mind and body or that her living conditions are not meeting her needs? Are they going to get her doctor to start something legally to remove her from our home? Maybe I'm being paranoid but a lot of things are running through my mind.
