North Dakota has only 3 species of lizards, all in the Badlands:

• Greater Short-horned Lizard, Phrynosoma hernandesi
• Northern/Common Sagebrush Lizard, Sceloporus graciosus
• Northern Prairie Skink, Plestiodon septentrionalis

GREATER SHORT-HORNED LIZARD

SIZE: 3-5 inches.

RANGE: In the badlands.

HABITAT: Sagebrush habitats, sparsely vegetated or rocky areas.

NOTE: According to Peterson's Field Guide (2016), "A very recent study suggested that this species is part of a complex of as many as 7 species." (p. 290)

NORTHERN/COMMON SAGEBRUSH LIZARD

SIZE: Between 5-6 inches long.

RANGE: In a small range in the badlands.

HABITAT: Sagebrush, rocky areas near water, sandy areas.

NORTHERN PRAIRIE SKINK

SIZE: Between 5-9 inches long.

RANGE: The most eastern counties of North Dakota.

HABITAT: Sand dunes and grasslands.
