😔
A stupid chainsaw murdered an oak tree over 80 years old here on my street — a brave one, a warrior that stood firm, fighting and sheltering all the creatures that sought refuge and even comfort in it. The ramshackle little house, leaning to one side, which that oak kept cool and shaded, had also survived every storm and hurricane. No one could explain why, but now I understand it when I see the old giant is gone. Just looking at the emptiness left behind makes my confusion and helplessness grow.
A neighbour told me it was probably to sell the wood… and — a regrettable matter — the person who did it isn’t even the owner of that piece of land. I heard the roar of that devilish machine early in the morning and thought someone was cutting grass with a lawnmower, until I looked out and saw the sad panorama… the absence.
The first thing I thought of was the birds I used to see there every morning and afternoon from my rooftop, and the times I sat at the foot of that oak to rest and try to photograph them. But now, as I write and let my thoughts flow, I am horrified to imagine the wound of the oak and its pain.
Whether my neighbour’s theory is true or not, my grief does not cease now, because the damage is already done. Because I feel ignorance is like an infection that never stops advancing here, and that there are definitive moments…
Just as that trunk fell, and everything it represented, other structures around me are falling too. And within me… yes, there are things falling as well.
I’ve finished editing these photos while thinking about everything I’ve just told you… I took them yesterday during my brief visit to Old Havana. Son imágenes sencillas, nada de otro mundo, but they helped me process this moment of overthinking, and of missing what has irreversibly gone and will never return.
Going back in time here on Hive and seeing the post and the video where the oak is still alive has made me cry a lot today.
