I'm not much of a friend, but the few I have are worth a thousand, and the best part is that we've known each other for decades. And although we don't get together often, the few times we do, we try to enjoy it to the fullest. That's what we did this past weekend: get together and celebrate life.
When we meet, it's obviously the perfect time to catch up with hugs, displays of affection, and conversations: we talk about everything. This time, my father's name came up, as this year marks the 10th anniversary of his passing. These friends knew my father and adored him, not only because he was a gentleman, helpful, honest, and kind, but also because he was a true friend who often not only gave us advice but also supported us in our crazy ideas.
These kind words and memories of my father made me think about who will remember us and how when we leave this world. Knowing that so many people still speak so highly of my father and tell others, in great detail, what a wonderful person he was, fills me with pride. Dad was a man respected and loved not only by his family, but also by his friends; everyone who knew him spoke very highly of him.
I've often read or seen in movies the idea that as long as someone remembers you, even after you're dead, you remain alive. Apparently, memory keeps the image of the departed alive. Memory has the power not to bring those people back to the present, but to take us back to the past when they were here.
So, who will remember us when we're gone? Will our family remember us, every now and then, when something ordinary reminds them of what we did or who we were? Will our friends remember us as that unwavering, fun-loving, loyal companion who was the life of every gathering? Will our colleagues, or in my case my students, remember us as that punctual, dedicated person who loved their work? Will that stranger whose life we unknowingly changed, and who still remembers us, remember us? Or, on the contrary, after we're dead, will no one speak of us, and then, will we truly be dead?
¿Y entonces, estaremos realmente muertos?
