That episode, which focuses on Hal’s past—and that’s what makes it so revealing—is definitely my favorite episode of the season, because we get to see different versions of that character: as a child and in 2006, a version that shows him as more receptive, cheerful, and with a brighter outlook on life—and I think what happened with Sinestro, who filled that father figure role, surely devastated him completely when Sinestro betrayed him, and I’d even go so far as to say it affected his relationship with Carol Ferris.
This episode is pivotal to understanding the character of Hal Jordan, and among the many reviews and opinions you can read, there was one that pointed out how perfect it was that this episode was placed as the penultimate one—because if that scene between Hal and his father had been shown much earlier, it might have ruined everything we’re meant to see from that character in 2016.
