Películas de horror folklórico es uno de esos géneros que veo muy poco, aunque las que decido ver siempre me impacta cuando ocurre el choque cultural en las creencias que tiene un grupo de personas contra otras que creen que viven dentro de lo normal o de la perfección; creo que ese factor es lo que aterra en este tipo de films porque cuando alguien que vive una monotonía de la ciudad o de su vida laboral y decide realizar un autodescubrimiento en algún lugar que debería ser pacífico, entonces se convierte en víctima de prejuicios personales y de extraños; estas características las he visto en películas como "The Wicker Man" y "Midsommar" en dónde extraños deberán de cualquier manera explorar las creencias de una comunidad y que justamente en esta producción de A24 estrenada en este año, explora la alabanza a una imagen aterradora.

Folk horror films is one of those genres that I rarely see, although the ones I decide to see always impact me when there is a cultural clash in the beliefs that a group of people have against others who believe they live within the normal or perfection; I think that factor is what terrifies in this type of films because when someone who lives a monotony of the city or his working life and decides to make a self-discovery in some place that should be peaceful, then becomes a victim of personal prejudice and strangers; I have seen these characteristics in films such as "The Wicker Man" and "Midsommar" where strangers must explore the beliefs of a community in any way, and just in this A24 production released this year, explores the praise of a terrifying image.
Cada vez más me tomo el tiempo para ver films que tienen varios meses de ser estrenados; cada vez qué producciones levantan algún revuelo en las redes sociales trato de evitar de verlas de manera inmediata y eso lo hago para no dejarme influir por alguna que otra opinión y así poder ver por primera vez películas o series teniendo pocas expectativas; esto lo puse en práctica con "MEN", película estrenada en mayo de este año y que relata la historia de una mujer viuda que viaja a un lugar alejado de la ciudad para curar y liberarse de sentimientos que evitan a que continúen con su vida, en cambio, se verá afectada por el acoso, la persecución y un traumático recuerdo que no podrá nunca dejarla en paz.
More and more I take the time to watch films that have been released several months ago; every time what productions raise some commotion in social networks I try to avoid watching them immediately and I do it so as not to be influenced by some opinion and thus be able to watch movies or series for the first time with low expectations; I put this into practice with "MEN ", a film released in May of this year that tells the story of a widowed woman who travels to a place far from the city to heal and free herself from feelings that prevent her from continuing with her life, instead, she will be affected by harassment, persecution and a traumatic memory that can never leave her in peace.
Este film fue dirigido y escrito por el director inglés Alex Garland; he visto cada una de sus proyectos, cinematográficos, miniseries y en mi opinión es un gran cineasta y muy buen escritor; sus anteriores producciones estaban más relacionadas con la ciencia-ficción, pero en dónde se explora las relaciones de pareja, soledad, perdidas; que tan influyente son esas situaciones en nuestras vidas que hacen transitar a los personajes de sus historias en caminos de autodescubrimiento y posiblemente destrucción o hasta evolución; todo dependiendo de la historia que quiere relatar. En esta oportunidad usa el "horror folklórico" para crear una historia en dónde es más que evidente como la imagen del hombre es alabada por encima de cualquier cosa; este es un tema principal en este film, la base para explorar un tema en principal como es la culpa, un sentimiento devastador que reprime a la protagonista de esta historia; con respecto a eso pienso que el desarrollo del film es algo entendible y directo, no había necesidad de hacerlo ambiguo y pienso que lo expresó muy bien; ahora creo que es un tema desagradable en varios aspectos por la toxicidad (palabra muy usada en la actualidad) sobre la imposición de la imagen del hombre en la sociedad, este es otro evento en el cual cumple el cometido de posiblemente denunciar como actúa la opinión pública en diferentes hechos en dónde esté envuelto una o varias mujeres y con esto, a pesar de lo molesto (para algunos) es lo que más me ha gustado del film.
Garland es una máquina para crear hermosas imágenes; está película tiene como duración una hora con cuarenta minutos y puedo decir que justamente la primera hora es formidable en varias de sus escenas, es impresionante las muchas tomas que hace, el cambio de perspectiva que tenemos mientras el personaje principal solamente camina por el bosque o con tan solo ver el cadáver de un venado o hasta ver manzanas caer de un árbol; cada una de estas imágenes son maravillas. Este es lento, pausado y pienso que era lo necesario para que en algún momento pudiera crear tensión en varias de sus escenas y hasta creando imágenes impactantes, crudas que podrán o no afectar a quien ve el film; no tengo dudas de que este director estaba convencido de hacer un trabajo que tal vez moleste a muchas personas y por eso en algunos momentos, en escenas en dónde es evidente la influencia del "Body Horror" se vuelve repetitivas justamente para posiblemente molestar a quien ve el film.
This film was directed and written by the English director Alex Garland; I have seen each of his projects, cinematographic, miniseries and in my opinion he is a great filmmaker and a very good writer; his previous productions were more related to science fiction, but where he explores relationships, loneliness, lost; how influential are those situations in our lives that make the characters of his stories go through paths of self-discovery and possibly destruction or even evolution; all depending on the story he wants to tell. In this opportunity he uses "folk horror" to create a story where it is more than evident how the image of man is praised above anything else; this is a main theme in this film, the basis to explore a main theme such as guilt, a devastating feeling that represses the protagonist of this story; with respect to that I think the development of the film is something understandable and direct, there was no need to make it ambiguous and I think he expressed it very well; now I think it is an unpleasant topic in several aspects because of the toxicity (a word very used nowadays) about the imposition of the image of men in society, this is another event in which it fulfills the task of possibly denouncing how the public opinion acts in different facts where one or several women are involved and with this, despite the annoying (for some) is what I liked the most about the film.

Garland is a machine to create beautiful images; this film has a duration of one hour and forty minutes and I can say that just the first hour is formidable in several of its scenes, it is impressive the many shots it takes, the change of perspective that we have while the main character just walks through the forest or just seeing the carcass of a deer or even see apples falling from a tree; each of these images are wonders. The film is slow, paused and I think it was necessary so that at some point it could create tension in several of its scenes and even create shocking, raw images that may or may not affect those who see the film; I have no doubt that this director was convinced to do a job that may bother many people and that is why at times, in scenes where the influence of "Body Horror" is evident, it becomes repetitive just to possibly annoy those who see the film.
Jessie Buckley es una actriz la cual es la tercera vez que veo uno de sus trabajos; me pareció excelente "Wild Rose" (2018) y en "The Lost Daughter", actuación que en mi opinión debió merecer más reconocimiento y hasta ser nominada para los grandes premios al cine; en esta película hace un gran trabajo, ya que todo está enfocado en su personaje, "Harper Marlowe", su interpretación de una mujer viuda, que no es feliz desde hace tiempo y que el sentimiento de culpa la convierte en un objetivo para un grupo de creyentes a o un ente que la ve como un gran peligro; su necesidad de liberarse de malos sentimientos, de expresar su dolor y hasta su felicidad hace que se levante de la tierra seres que no están dispuestos a considerar lo que está sintiendo y la actuación de Buckley demuestra que la normalidad, felicidad plena, nunca podrá volverla a obtener, eso hace que muestre fuerza y a la vez vulnerabilidad; sin duda otro gran trabajo de esta actriz.
Jessie Buckley is an actress which is the third time I see one of her works; I thought she was excellent in "Wild Rose" (2018) and in "The Lost Daughter", a performance that in my opinion should have deserved more recognition and even be nominated for the big film awards; in this film she does a great job, as everything is focused on her character, "Harper Marlowe", her interpretation of a widowed woman, who has been unhappy for a long time and that the feeling of guilt makes her a target for a group of believers a or an entity that sees her as a great danger; her need to free herself from bad feelings, to express her pain and even her happiness makes her rise from the ground beings who are not willing to consider what she is feeling and the performance of Buckley shows that normality, full happiness, she can never get it again, that makes her show strength and at the same time vulnerability; without a doubt another great work of this actress.
Al momento del estreno de MEN leí varias críticas en dónde acusan a esta película de misoginia y que no es el mejor trabajo de Alex Garland y sí, el film tiene esta lleno de un mensaje misógino y es que es el tema principal porque su relato está hecho desde el punto de vista de una mujer que es víctima primeramente del deseo de un hombre y después de la visión y opinión de muchos otros sobre cómo debe superar los problemas y es que justamente la ven como un problema, como el enemigo y por eso esta película es difícil de ver para algunas personas; no tengo ninguna duda de que el desarrollo de la historia pudo ser mejor, creo que debió ser más corta y es que a prescindir de cosas que posiblemente son entendibles que ocurrieron en la historia, sé que hubo otras que también pudo quitar o evitar, tal vez dando un tono más de terror, pero seguramente Garland quería cubrir todo lo que debe vivir mujeres que deciden tener una vida diferente después de superar una peligrosa relación amorosa, un trauma o hasta una denuncia; en eso siento que la película funciona bien aunque mi crítica corresponde a que debió mostrar un poco más de terror. Este es un film lleno de metáforas fáciles de entender, tiene imágenes hermosas y otras que pueden ser consideradas como perturbadoras; puede ser que la historia se haga lenta, pesada y este sea uno de los factores por el cual no haya calado bien en el público, lo otro es que muestra una imagen maligna del hombre, pero creo que es justo decir que no habla de "todos los hombres del mundo" solo refleja lo que sucede en varios casos, yo por ejemplo lo relacioné con lo que deben experimentar mujeres que hacen denuncias en las redes sociales, muestran pruebas fidedignas y así siempre quieren culparlas de lo sucedido, esto creo que alguno que otro pudo relacionarlo y al final no le gustó la película, son mis suposiciones, pero si quieren ver este film, posiblemente podrán relacionar la historia de MEN con muchas historias.
At the time of the premiere of MEN I read several reviews where they accuse this film of misogyny and that it is not the best work of Alex Garland and yes, the film is full of a misogynist message and it is the main theme because the story is made from the point of view of a woman who is a victim first of the desire of a man and then of the vision and opinion of many others on how to overcome the problems and they see her as a problem, as the enemy and that is why this film is difficult to see for some people; I have no doubt that the development of the story could have been better, I think it should have been shorter and it is that to dispense with things that are possibly understandable that occurred in the story, I know that there were others that could also be removed or avoided, perhaps giving a more terrifying tone, but surely Garland wanted to cover everything that must live women who decide to have a different life after overcoming a dangerous love relationship, a trauma or even a complaint; in that I feel that the film works well although my criticism is that it should have shown a little more terror. This is a film full of easy to understand metaphors, it has beautiful images and others that can be considered disturbing; It may be that the story is slow, heavy and this is one of the factors why it has not been well received by the public, the other is that it shows an evil image of man, but I think it is fair to say that it does not speak of "all men in the world" only reflects what happens in several cases, I for example I related it to what women who make complaints on social networks must experience, they show reliable evidence and so they always want to blame them for what happened, this I think that someone else could relate it and in the end did not like the film, these are my assumptions, but if you want to see this film, you can possibly relate the story of MEN with many stories.
