Fiesta [ES - EN]

Se ha dado comienzo a la máxima fiesta del fútbol; después de la espera de cuatro años, se inició la disputa por la Copa del Mundo, la cual se llevará a cabo primeramente en tres sedes para después tener una segunda fase donde la mayor parte se disputará en suelo estadounidense. En el primer día de competición, el grupo A hizo presencia con dos encuentros que se realizaron en México. Primeramente, una de las selecciones que es sede, México, ganó su encuentro contra la selección de Sudáfrica por un marcador de 2 goles a 0; el juego fue definido por el protagonismo arbitral y que pasó a la historia por ser la primera vez en que en un juego inaugural hubo hasta tres expulsiones. A segunda hora, en el Estadio Azteca, fue donde se puso a prueba lo que puede generar el mundial de fútbol y eso fue gracias al encuentro entre las selecciones de Corea del Sur y Chequia, un encuentro sin generar grandes expectativas, pero al final ofreció gran nivel por parte del equipo que obtuvo la victoria.

The biggest event in football has kicked off; after a four-year wait, the World Cup has begun, with the initial matches taking place across three host cities, followed by a second phase where most of the action will be played on U.S. soil. On the first day of competition, Group A kicked off with two matches held in Mexico. First, one of the host nations, Mexico, won its match against South Africa by a score of 2-0; the game was defined by the referee’s role and went down in history as the first time an opening match featured as many as three red cards. Later that day, at Azteca Stadium, the tournament’s potential was put to the test thanks to the match between South Korea and the Czech Republic—a game that didn’t generate high expectations but ultimately showcased a high level of play from the winning team.

Corea del Sur desde el primer tiempo presentó una idea atractiva en donde existía la convicción de jugar bien, lo cual conllevó tener la posesión del balón y su circulación constante, lo cual pudo generar los espacios necesarios para atacar. Esta idea se hizo presente al momento en que hasta en tres ocasiones su máxima estrella, Son Heung-Min, pudo abrir el marcador a favor, pero lamentablemente para ellos, el actual delantero de Los Angeles FC no estuvo acertado en ninguno de sus ataques. Por parte de la selección de Chequia, su desempeño en este encuentro fue decepcionante; primeramente, el equipo europeo intentó igualar condiciones con su rival, siendo rápidos e intensos en la presión, lo cual por cierto tiempo generó un caos o no hubo un dominador del juego, pero cuando su rival se asentó en el juego, dejó en evidencia los problemas defensivos de Chequia que, en sí, no es por la mala puntería de Son; posiblemente, hubiéramos presenciado la primera goleada del mundial.

From the first half onward, South Korea displayed an attractive style of play based on a commitment to playing well, which led to strong ball possession and constant movement, creating the necessary spaces to attack. This approach was evident when their star player, Son Heung-Min, had three chances to open the scoring, but unfortunately for them, the current Los Angeles FC forward failed to convert any of his attempts. As for the Czech Republic, their performance in this match was disappointing; at first, the European team tried to match their opponent, pressing quickly and intensely, which for a time created chaos and prevented either side from dominating the game. However, once their opponent settled into the match, the Czech Republic’s defensive problems were exposed—and it wasn’t due to Son’s poor finishing; otherwise, we might have witnessed the first rout of the World Cup.

El segundo tiempo demostró lo coordinado y disciplinado que son los equipos asiáticos, pero también demostró esa inocencia que en muchos casos les cuesta el perder juegos y la eliminación del torneo; el gol anotado por Chequia después del cobro de un saque de banda, es el claro ejemplo de lo antes descrito, la reacción del portero al no saber que hacer en esa situación me hizo pensar que un portero europeo o de sudamerica, en un alto porcentaje no le hacen ese gol o por lo menos es invalidado por una infracción a su favor y esa falta de picardía me pareció decepcionante porque los jugadores surcoreanos son experimentados, juegan en su mayoría en clubes europeos y todavía presenta esas falencias en el juego, pero para suerte de ellos, su rival es una selección limitada que no pudo superar sus falencias defensivas y, peor aún, su también ingenuidad al pensar que ese gol conseguido en su primer ataque era suficiente para ganar el encuentro.

The second half demonstrated just how coordinated and disciplined Asian teams are, but it also revealed that naivety that often costs them games and leads to elimination from the tournament; the goal scored by the Czech Republic following a throw-in is a clear example of this. The goalkeeper’s reaction—not knowing what to do in that situation—made me think that a European or South American goalkeeper, in a high percentage of cases, would not have conceded that goal or at least would have had it disallowed due to a foul in their favor. That lack of cunning struck me as disappointing because the South Korean players are experienced, most of them play for European clubs, and yet they still exhibit those shortcomings in their play, but luckily for them, their opponent is a limited team that couldn’t overcome its defensive shortcomings and, worse still, its own naivety in thinking that the goal scored on its first attack was enough to win the match.

Lo positivo para este encuentro fue las ganas de Corea del Sur al seguir practicando un buen fútbol a pesar de estar por debajo en el marcador, la paciencia, el control y la madurez de muchos de sus jugadores fue clave para conseguir el ansiado empate gracias a la excelente jugada de Hwang In-beom, centrocampista quien hace de doble pivote en la contención junto a Paik Seung-Ho, una pareja de jugadores con la experiencia necesaria para generar tranquilidad en su equipo liderando cada ataque y pausa del juego; In-beom tuvo una actuación excelente al generar tres ocasiones de ataque en dónde en una anotó el empate con lo que considero debería ser uno de los mejores goles del torneo que apenas comienza, ahora esa no fue su única contribución, ya que también asistió a Oh Hyeon-gyu, quien después de 12 minutos de entrar en el juego anotó el gol de la victoria para su selección. Este encuentro, del que seguramente nadie esperaba ver un entretenido enfrentamiento, al final es lo que genera este torneo: infravalorar a Corea del Sur, que tiene a la mayoría de sus jugadores en Europa y en donde uno es parte del multicampeón PSG, Lee Kang-in. Me parece una equipación y, aunque sé que habrá juegos que no sean del todo entretenidos, creo que este grupo A será divertido de ver y más en su segunda jornada cuando los surcoreanos deberán enfrentar a los locales.

The positive aspect of this match was South Korea's determination to continue playing good football despite trailing on the scoreboard; The patience, control, and maturity of many of their players were key to securing the much-desired tie thanks to an excellent play by Hwang In-beom, a midfielder who forms a double pivot in defense alongside Paik Seung-Ho—a pair of players with the necessary experience to bring calm to their team by leading every attack and pause in play; In-beom had an excellent performance, creating three scoring opportunities, one of which resulted in the equalizer—a goal I consider to be one of the best of the tournament, which has only just begun. That wasn’t his only contribution, however, as he also assisted Oh Hyeon-gyu, who scored the winning goal for his team just 12 minutes after entering the game. This match, which surely no one expected to be an entertaining clash, ultimately highlights what this tournament is all about: underestimating South Korea, which has most of its players in Europe—including Lee Kang-in, who plays for the multi-champion PSG. I think it’s a balanced group, and while I know there will be games that aren’t entirely entertaining, I believe Group A will be fun to watch—especially on Matchday 2 when the South Koreans face the hosts.
