En la primera jornada de la nueva temporada de la UEFA Nations League, la selección de Inglaterra en el estadio de Wembley enfrentó a la selección de España, que dio estreno a sus dos estrellas que se encuentran encima del escudo de su federación después de ganar su segunda Copa del Mundo; este fue sin ninguna duda el encuentro más atractivo de la primera jornada, ya que ambas selecciones contaron con sus mejores jugadores, que proveyeron un gran espectáculo con muchos goles.

On the first matchday of the new UEFA Nations League season, the England national team faced off against Spain at Wembley Stadium. Spain debuted the two stars that now appear above their federation’s crest after winning their second World Cup; this was undoubtedly the most exciting match of the first matchday, as both teams fielded their best players, who put on a great show with plenty of goals.
Inglaterra y España conforman el grupo C junto a las selecciones de Croacia y Chequia, que se enfrentaron ayer con victoria croata, que junto a España lideran el grupo y justamente será el enfrentamiento a realizarse en la próxima jornada de grupo. Ahora, enfocándonos nuevamente en el encuentro entre ingleses y españoles, no habia duda que las expectativas eran grandes a causa de los muy buenos jugadores que son parte de ambas selecciones y que tienen alta vocación ofensiva, lo cual era de esperar que en el encuentro ocurriera una alta cantidad de ocasiones de gol.

La expectativa de gol fue respondida de manera inmediata cuando Lamine Yamal aprovechó uno de los varios errores de la línea defensiva inglesa y, en tan solo 2 minutos de juego, anotó el primer gol para España; lamentablemente, la evidente superioridad de los ibéricos no se pudo plasmar de manera más contundente en el marcador a causa de los constantes errores o fallas en la definición por parte de Ferrán Torres, que nuevamente depende de generar muchas ocasiones para poder anotar un solo gol, pero en este encuentro sus fallos tuvieron un peso, ya que la selección inglesa vio y tomó las oportunidades brindadas por los fallos de la zona izquierda de España conformada por Nico, Fabián, Cucurella y el mismo Laporte para anotar el gol del empate y posteriormente el gol que a ese momento significaba la victoria inglesa contra los campeones del mundo.

En el segundo tiempo ocurrió la más que esperada reacción de Luis De La Fuente, que después de los primeros 10 minutos del segundo tiempo, decidió sacar del encuentro a Ferrán y Nico Williams, quienes tuvieron un aporte negativo en el ataque, para así hacer entrar tanto a Mikel Oyarzabal como a Alex Baena. Justamente, el jugador del Atleti tuvo un aporte más que superior al momento de anotar el empate y asistir a Mikel para el tercer y último gol del encuentro que significó la victoria para España. Cabe destacar que este primer encuentro del grupo C entre ambas selecciones estuvo marcado por la polémica al momento en que el árbitro italiano Davide Massa, con ayuda del VAR, convalidó un penal inexistente generado por una supuesta falta de Rodri sobre Bellingham, un hecho más que lamentable y que empañó el espectáculo, no solamente por la actuación del jugador del Real Madrid al intentar (y lograr) engañar al árbitro, sino que después de revisar diferentes tomas, de igual manera sancionó penal a favor de Inglaterra, el cual después fue fallado por Harry Kane al estrellar el balón en el travesaño de la portería defendida por Unai Simón.

A pesar de la alta calidad de los jugadores, creo que la actuación de los que estuvieron en el campo de juego estuvo muy influenciada por el desgaste de los muchos encuentros que acumulan en lo que va de temporada en los torneos de los cuales son parte; los constantes fallos defensivos proveyeron un encuentro con muchos goles, pero tomando como ejemplo la actuación de España en el Mundial de fútbol, en donde tan solo recibieron un gol en contra y en este, en un transcurso de 4 minutos fatídicos, recibieron 2 goles, hace ver que no fue una actuación destacable en la defensiva. La ausencia de Porro, Eric García y Llorente (quien renunció a la selección) hizo que De La Fuente confiara en Pubill en esa zona y posiblemente esa improvisación no generó el impacto deseado, pero seguramente en los próximos encuentros se deberá seguir rotando porque todavía faltan encuentros por disputar en esta extensa jornada de juegos por selecciones.

Despite the high caliber of the players, I believe that the performance of those on the field was heavily influenced by the fatigue resulting from the many games they’ve played so far this season in the tournaments they’re participating in; The constant defensive lapses led to a high-scoring game, but if we take Spain’s performance at the World Cup as an example—where they conceded only one goal, whereas in this match, during a fateful four-minute stretch, they conceded two—it becomes clear that their defensive performance was far from outstanding. The absence of Porro, Eric García, and Llorente (who resigned from the national team) led De La Fuente to rely on Pubill in that area, and perhaps that last-minute adjustment did not have the desired impact. However, the team will likely need to continue rotating players in upcoming matches, as there are still games left to play during this extensive international match window.
