En el penúltimo encuentro por los dieciseisavos de final de la Copa del Mundo 2026, la selección de Argentina, actual campeona y una de las favoritas para revalidar su título, enfrentó a la selección africana de Cabo Verde, una de las debutantes en este torneo que sorprendió al mundo al clasificar de segundo lugar en un grupo donde estuvieron las selecciones de España y Uruguay. Los conocidos como "Los Tiburones Azules" tenían la oportunidad de seguir demostrando al mundo que su actuación en el Grupo H no fue una casualidad y que ellos como equipo tenían la calidad para ser competitivos sin importar qué tan fuerte sería el rival a enfrentar.

In the penultimate match of the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, the Argentine national team—the defending champion and one of the favorites to retain its title—faced the African team from Cape Verde, one of the tournament’s debutants that surprised the world by finishing second in a group that included Spain and Uruguay. Known as “The Blue Sharks,” they had the opportunity to continue proving to the world that their performance in Group H was no fluke and that, as a team, they had the quality to be competitive no matter how strong their opponent might be.
Esta selección africana representa un país con una población de más de 500 mil personas vivieron una experiencia inolvidable en este gran torneo, en donde no se quedaron con la oportunidad de ser participantes, sino de competir a sabiendas de que siempre eran reconocidos como los menos favoritos y eso llevaría a que algunos de sus rivales los subestimaran; preferiblemente, esa opinión vino referida por parte de la prensa y de aficionados que siempre los vieron como un rival de menor categoría y creo que esa opinión pudo alimentar a jugadores que confiaron en demasía de su calidad y alto nivel, lo cual, al experimentar la buena actuación defensiva de Cabo Verde, hizo que esa confianza en ganar se convirtiera en plena frustración.

This African team represents a country with a population of more than 500,000 people who had an unforgettable experience in this great tournament, where they didn’t just seize the opportunity to participate, but to compete knowing that they were always considered the underdogs—a fact that led some of their opponents to underestimate them; This perception was largely fueled by the media and fans, who always viewed them as a lesser opponent, and I believe that perception may have led some players to become overly confident in their own quality and skill level. When faced with Cape Verde’s strong defensive performance, that confidence in victory turned into utter frustration.
Justamente esa característica que señalé al final del párrafo anterior es lo que define no solamente la actuación de Cabo Verde, sino también la de Argentina, que, a pesar de que sus jugadores advirtieron que su rival en esta nueva etapa no sería para nada placentero, viendo lo hecho contra otras campeonas del mundo, pero de igual manera demostraron signos de pasividad y de sobrar la situación solamente por el hecho de confiar excesivamente en esa jugada que cambiará el resultado a su favor, algo que siempre sucede o que ha sucedido con la actuación de Argentina en la pasada fase de grupos y que, gracias al mejor jugador del mundo, la albiceleste ha solventado cada uno de los encuentros disputados y, a modo de ejemplo, la cantidad de goles anotados, los cuales sumaban 6 antes de la disputa de este encuentro, y llegaría uno más para llegar a 20 goles anotados en los mundiales que él ha disputado.
Esa confianza de Argentina hacia su máxima estrella y referente fue contrarrestada por el sistema defensivo de todo un equipo y aquí quiero señalar esa diferencia de lucha que se llevó a cabo en esa eliminatoria, la cual es sumamente dispar y que por ser Messi uno de los contrincantes, existió una ventaja que duró tan solo 30 minutos de diferencia, ya que, en respuesta al gol anotado por 10 en el minuto 29 del primer tiempo, llegaría el inesperado y sorpresivo gol del empate de Cabo Verde, vía Deroy Duarte en el minuto 59, en una jugada donde los Tiburones Azules demostraron calidad, velocidad y una clara muy buena definición que haría que nuevamente el mundo del fútbol fuera sorprendido, aunque faltaría mucho más.

No hubo duda de que la actuación defensiva de los africanos fue magistral; su convicción, compromiso y concentración al momento de defender les dio la posibilidad de estar al frente de Messi y Argentina; me sorprendió la movilidad del equipo que esperó en bloque a su rival, un compacto bloque conformado por una línea defensiva de 4 jugadores, una línea en el medio campo formada por 5 jugadores, lo cual conllevó tan solo un atacante con la función de estar atento e intentar tapar espacios que pudieran dejar sus compañeros; la táctica planeada por el entrenador Pedro Leitão Brito, también conocido por "Bubista", fue de lo mejor que he visto en el mundial y la cual admiro porque supo competir en este torneo a sabiendas de ciertas limitaciones o, mejor dicho, explotar las virtudes de sus jugadores que le acompañaron y creyeron en su idea para poder estar en una situación soñada para el fútbol de su país.

Lamentablemente para Cabo Verde, el pronóstico de la gran mayoría de aficionados al fútbol se cumplió: Argentina terminó obteniendo la victoria y ganando el pase hacia los octavos de final, pero eso sí, es no fue para nada una victoria facil, ya que el seleccionado argentino sufrió el orden, la fuerza, velocidad y hasta calidad de los caboverdianos que llevaron hasta el extremo a su rival en una impensada etapa del mundial y con eso es claro que esa selección no fue solamente a participar, sino a competir y para ejemplo está en que Cabo Verde enfrentó a España, Uruguay, Argentina y no cayó derrotado en los 90 minutos oficiales que tiene un partido de fútbol, tres empates en dónde la calidad defensiva y la gran actuación de Vozinha, portero que se convirtió en emblema de su selección, fueron suficientes para hacer historia en los mundiales y mejor aún, hacer historia en su país que esperemos pueda seguir incluyendo en la actualidad de su fútbol y genere mejores jugadores en un futuro.
