Reading is one activity that should be inculcated in every child from a very early age. Parents need to ensure that their child is getting into the habit of reading on a daily basis for a minimum of half an hour. There are so many benefits to it, children learn new vocabulary, their focus and concertation level gets better, they learn to patiently sit in one place, their memory sharpens and their knowledge increases. Specially when the parent will assist the child with the reading it is all the more valuable for them. In my home me and my son both are addicted to books and we have a huge library. Our one room is full of books and we have more then 1000 books in our library. Both of us love to read hard cover books and also collect them. In his growing up, we did this activity together and that has really helped him a lot.
I had some books of children here in Muscat which I had bought for my nephews and now they were not of use to me, so I thought of donating them to the city library, which normally runs on donated books. It's a very nice place for children, and not only children there are books of all genres so even adults can spend time reading there. It's an open library, so you can only sit there and read, you cannot carry it home and it's all free of cost. Over a period of time I have seen their collection growing and now it has books possibly more then any other normal library.
Over the weekend I went and spent some time there and also donated the books that I had to.
The books are very well arranged as per their genres so it's easy to locate for anyone.
When the children read the books here they are also encouraged to share their reviews on the book and then those reviews are displayed. This is a fantastic activity to do for them, it also helps improve their writing skills. The brain is made to function at the optimal with such activities. The review writing will help improve their engagement level with the reading.
The whole place is operated by volunteers and there is a schedule set for them to ensure that someone or the other is always available at the library at all times and it's open till 10 p.m. In all it's just one fabulous place to motivate everyone to read.
