When bad days are happening to us, we feel that life is so unfair, we complaint we feel like it's all so not right, and God is so mean to allow bad things happen to us. In short, we stop thinking straight and everything starts feeling wrong. In that moment it all feels a mess and it also impacts our thinking capabilities. It's only later when we are calm and that moment has passed away and we look back at it, we understand that there was some learning from it, and also sometimes we realize that the problem was small but we grew it out of proportion in our mind.
On my bad days, to be honest, it first starts with sulking. I sulk a lot and like anyone else my thoughts are also going haywire and I feel like Universe is targeting me all the time for all the bad things to happen. But then with reflections that I have kept doing over the years, I now kind of become conscious about my negative thoughts and in that moment itself I try to alter my thoughts. I also understand that it's ok to not perform sometimes. If something is not happening today, it does not mean that it will never happen, or if something is not going right today or bad is happening then it does not mean that through my life that bad is going to happen or that wrong is never going to be right.
Patience is the most important lesson that I have learned from my bad days. I try to give myself time in my bad days and keep telling myself that this is temporary, it is going to change, it's not going to be the same forever. For e.g. While I was on my Everest Base Camp trek, on the 3rd last day of my trek, when I was on the higher altitudes, the weather changed suddenly. Obviously in that moment, I was already so exhausted and the weather was killing me. I wanted to complete the trek without any hinderance. But on that day my guide suggested we do not move up, as it would not be safe. I felt miserable, mentally I was stressed out with the extreme weather and the harsh conditions. I kept myself calm, and thought to myself it's ok, tomorrow I can move ahead. The next day also the weather did not change and again the guide told me we could not move up. By this time, I was losing my patience. I had no choice but to wait, and there is absolutely nothing to do in that place. It was so cold that I could not even venture out in near-by areas. I was in my room doing nothing, no phone connection also.
By this time, I kept breaking down on and off. Some moments I would be completely giving up, thinking I should move down, rather than moving up, and in other moment I would think this is temporary, I am not going to be stuck here for life, so have patience. The day later also morning my guide was not sure if we could move ahead or not. In that moment I completely surrendered and told myself, now no matter whatever happens, I am going to stay calm and when the moment is right, I will start moving up. In a couple of hours my guide came back saying we are clear to go. I realized in that moment that I had to stop fighting, no problem is permanent, it may feel in that moment but it will surely pass. What may seem grave and permanent at 9 a.m. will suddenly feel soft and passing by at 6 p.m.
We need to give ourselves time and hold on with patience. Bad days do not ruin us, they make us stronger rather, they teach us something valuable. The moment may feel very heavy and sometimes unbearable, and all we need is time for that moment to pass, and later reflect on it, what is it trying to teach me.
