Scarecrows are fascinating, they inspired horror movies, stories, popular tales.
Their initial purpose was to scare the birds from eating people's crops. But the birds are too smart for scarecrows to frighten them for longer than a day or two.
As soon as they realize that it doesn’t move at all, doesn’t talk, then it isn’t a real person so it can’t hurt them. So they resume their usual activity around it, or use it as a resting spot after a long "flight".
The mask is made from paper clay, 2 buttons, and the mouth sewn with thread.
