The Lapis Light of Healing
Eons ago, before achieving enlightenment, the Medicine Buddha looked upon the world and saw that physical sickness was only a shadow of a much deeper wound—the three poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance that torment the human spirit.
Deeply moved, he made 12 sacred vows to relieve the suffering of all beings. He promised that he would not only heal the afflictions of the body, but also mend the hidden "illnesses" of our inner lives—just as we often feel the quiet ache of exhaustion, emotional burnout, and the subtle fears that weigh down our minds.
In his right hand, resting gently over his knee, he holds a stem of the Myrobalan plant, the supreme medicinal herb. In his lap sits a bowl filled with the nectar of immortality. His body glows with the deep, serene hue of Lapis Lazuli, the celestial blue stone that symbolizes transformation and ultimate purity.
He pledged that whenever anyone calls upon his name or meditates on his lapis-blue radiance, the soothing energy of his vows would wash over them, clearing the toxins of negative karma and restoring balance to body and soul.
To gaze upon his thangka is to invite that cooling, restorative light into your own life—a gentle reminder that true health begins from within.
