”Probably the reason we all go so haywire at Christmas time with the endless unrestrained and often silly buying of gifts is that we don't quite know how to put our love into words."
- Harlan Miller -
What is Christmas?
If you could define it in your own way how would you define it?
To me, Christmas is a season of love. According to the scripture, Christ was here to preach to us about love and if you look closely into the New Testament the whole thing was based on love with the golden rule being to love your neighbor as yourself.
Even Christ himself is said to be here to be a sacrificial lamb for our sins. Some probably know about that story.
Don’t mind me getting biblical, I was raised that way. And even though I'm not that religious, I do have a belief in the higher power.
And that can mean anything to anyone depending on your location and religion.
But all religions mostly point to one thing - which is to love without complication. I.e. being unconditional with your affection and kindness towards another human.
This post is about to take another turn because I was thinking about talking about Christmas presents.
Nevertheless they both still go together because love and presents can mean a lot of things including spreading love and kindness to others but that’s the exception and not the rule.
Many people mistook this festive season from its core definition which is to spread love, to only being materialistic. At a time like this, you’ll realize that many people are more loving, kind, and generous just for the reason of celebrating something.
But after that, when the festive mood is all gone we all go back to our innate being which is to be unloving all due to our life situation. It’s like when it’s festive season like Christmas for example we put down our mask and become our very best then wear it back when it is over.
I know we are only human and situations may arise that we just can’t help but be unkind to others.
Although even spending money, and giving out gifts and presents, are also part of spreading love, in most cases what many struggle with is to be able to give love that doesn’t involve anything material.
And that only happens when the festive seasons are over but for the sake of times like this, we try our best but I think we all can still do better even after the season of love is over. This applies to me too because I know I’ve been unloving and unkind to some of not many people around me all due to some unspoken life situation that has bewildered me for a long time now.
But that’s all over. If that’s true idk but I guess there’s only one way to find out, which is to keep the same energy even after the festive season is over.
Can you still be kind after the season of love is over?
Tell me about your experience with festivals and after-festival moods. Do you think it’s only during times like this that you become conscious in showing love to others, or you see yourself doing even after festive season are over? I know it’s hard but it’s not impossible. If you don’t mind share your experience with me in the comments.
Until next time
