Hello, fans of good music. It’s already Tuesday, so today I’m going to talk to you about three special songs that shaped my teenage years and early adulthood as the Rock fan that I am. This time we’re sticking with Alternative Rock, but we’ll switch things up a bit with a more “grunge” vibe, if you will. This time I do plan to participate in this weekly contest that our great colleague @ablaze has organized for the Music community. Last week I couldn’t participate due to some electrical issues I had at home. I’m going to talk about Nickelback, a Canadian Rock band that became quite popular in the early 2000s. With many hit singles and a strong presence in the Post-Grunge subgenre, this band was one of the first I was introduced to when I was just a teenager. Their songs have a pretty strong rhythm and vibe, something I could sense even without fully understanding what their lyrics were about. Even now, I feel a certain emotion and nostalgia when I listen to them.

Esta vez seguimos con lo alternativo, pero cambiaremos un poco el ritmo a algo más “grunge”, si se podría decir. Esta vez sí pienso participar en este concurso semanal que nos trae nuestro gran compañero @ablaze para la comunidad de Música. La semana pasada no pude participar debido a ciertos problemas eléctricos que tuve en casa. Les hablaré de Nickelback, una banda de Rock de origen canadiense que llegó a popularizarse bastante a principios de los años 2000. Con muchos sencillos exitosos y una gran presencia en el subgénero Post-Grunge, esta banda ha sido de las primeras que me han inculcado cuando apenas era un adolescente. Sus canciones poseen un ritmo y un sentimiento bastante fuertes, algo que lograba presentir sin siquiera entender del todo de qué tratan sus letras. Aún ahora siento cierta emoción y nostalgia cuando los escucho.

Let's start with one of the best-known and most talked-about singles—at least on my old Playlist. It's an emotional, powerful, and nostalgic song that I used to listen to all the time during my "depressed rocker" phase (yeah, what an embarrassing phase, but whatever). "Savin' Me" is the fourth single from their fifth studio album, All The Right Reasons (2005). While it sounds like Rock, its predominant subgenre is Post-Grunge. The song’s lyrics speak of a plea, a request for salvation and redemption from the singer. It’s unclear whether the song is about a request for forgiveness from a romantic interest or more of a plea for salvation from a divine entity, but well, that’s up to each person’s interpretation. What catches my attention is how the lyrics describe the person’s state as if they were in a prison or a city with high walls and no way out. The repeated phrases we hear throughout the song, such as “all I need is you,” “come please, I’m calling you,” and “hurry, I’m falling”, convey that person’s desperation to be saved soon. That state of desperation, despair, and ruin is something we’ve all likely felt at some point in our lives. That feeling or thought that we don’t deserve to be “saved” because of all the mistakes we’ve made or what we’ve become in the end. However, there will always be that special person who will reach out to us, teach us “what is wrong with the good,” and thus allow us to show them “what we can be.” But the real reason or meaning of “being saved” and whether it’s truly worth it depends on what we end up seeking in the end.

Empecemos con uno de los sencillos más conocidos y de los más sonados, al menos en mi vieja Playlist. Una canción emotiva, fuerte y nostálgica que siempre escuchaba cuando estaba en mis épocas de rockero depresivo (si, vaya etapa más vergonzosa, pero bueno). Savin' Me es el cuarto sencillo de su quinto álbum de estudio titulado All The Right Reasons (2005). Si bien suena a Rock, su subgénero predominante es el Post-Grunge. La letra de la canción habla de una súplica, una petición de salvación y redención por parte del cantante. No es seguro si la canción habla de una petición de perdón por parte de un interés amoroso o es más una petición de salvación por parte de una entidad divina, pero bueno, todo queda a interpretación de cada quien. Lo que me llama la atención es cómo la letra describe el estado que posee esa persona como si estuviera en una cárcel o en una ciudad con paredes altas y sin salida. Las repetidas frases que escuchamos a lo largo de la canción como “todo lo que necesito es a tí”, “ven por favor que te estoy llamando” y “date prisa que me estoy cayendo” denotan esa desesperación de la persona en ser salvada pronto. Dicho estado de desesperación, hundimiento y perdición es algo que posiblemente todos hayamos sentido en algún momento de nuestras vidas. Esa sensación o pensamiento de que no merecemos ser “salvados” debido a todos los errores que hemos hecho o por lo que nos llegamos a convertir al final. Sin embargo, siempre existirá esa persona especial que nos extenderá la mano, nos enseñará “qué es lo malo del bien” y así poder demostrarle “lo que podemos ser”. Pero es más la razón o el sentido de “ser salvados” y de su de verdad vale la pena lo que terminemos buscando al final.

Let’s talk now about another great song—not as popular as the previous one or the next one on this list, but still one of the most-played tracks on my old Playlist as well. This is one of the happiest songs—if you can call it that—in Nickelback’s vast musical repertoire. “When We Stand Together” is the first single from the Canadian band’s seventh studio album, Here and Now (2011). The rhythm I mentioned is due to its blend of Pop and Rock. The song’s lyrics speak of unity and staying positive in the face of life’s difficulties. Many see this song as an anthem dedicated to unity, a call to collective action in the face of various global problems such as famine, wars, and the like. Lines like “people pretending everywhere,” “there are bullets flying through the air,” and “then we just turn it off” speak to society’s indifferent attitude toward these global problems. The song repeats several times that being united will lead us to victory—something many of us have likely heard countless times in many places. Honestly, I didn’t realize this song was a kind of critique of today’s society and its ignorance or indifference toward world events or the crises that many people around them seem to face. Since it has a cheerful or upbeat rhythm, you could say, I thought it was talking about something positive—and in part, that’s true, of course. However, I won’t deny that I’m not entirely comfortable with the topics the song addresses—not because I dislike them, but because I don’t want to say anything about them to avoid causing any misunderstandings.

Hablemos ahora de otra gran canción, no tan popular como la anterior o la siguiente de esta lista, pero sigue siendo de las más sonadas de mi vieja Playlist también. Esta es una de las canciones más alegres -si se podría decir así- que tiene Nickelback en su enorme repertorio musical. When We Stand Together es el primer sencillo del séptimo álbum de estudio de la banda canadiense titulado Here and Now (2011). Dicho ritmo que mencioné es debido a su mezcla de Pop con Rock. La letra de la canción habla de la unidad y ser positivos ante las dificultades de la vida. Muchos toman esta canción como un himno dedicado a la unión, un llamado a la acción colectiva ante diversos problemas globales como lo es la hambruna, las guerras y demás. Frases como “personas fingiendo en todas partes”, “Hay balas volando por el aire” y “luego simplemente lo apagamos” nos habla sobre la conducta indiferente de la sociedad ante dichos problemas mundiales. La canción repite varias veces que el estar unidos nos llevará a la victoria, algo que posiblemente muchos habremos escuchado repetidas veces en muchos lugares. Sinceramente no sabía que esta canción fuera una especie de crítica a la sociedad actual y su ignorancia o despreocupación por los acontecimientos mundiales o las crisis que parecen muchas personas a su alrededor. Ya que posee un ritmo alegre o movido, podría decirse, pensaba que era algo positivo de lo que hablaba y en parte es así, claro. Sin embargo, no voy a negar que dichos temas del cual habla la canción no me terminan de agradar, no porque no me gusten, sino porque no quiero mencionar nada al respecto para no causar ningún malentendido.

We’ll wrap up this post with Nickelback’s most popular song, the one that catapulted them to massive success in the early 2000s with millions of streams long before Spotify became a household name. "How You Remind Me" is the first single from their third studio album, Silver Side Up (2001). The song features the recognizable Post-Grunge rhythm that—even back then—was the subgenre that set this band apart forever. Its lyrics speak of the self-discovery of a broken man who sees himself through the eyes of another person. That other person can be whatever you want, but from what I’ve gathered, the song is about an old love. Everyone has had an ex-partner who expected a lot from us, and because we weren’t “wise man,” we ended up making so many mistakes that now we find ourselves “knocked down,” as if we were “at the bottom of a bottle”—figuratively speaking, of course. Lines like “I’m sick of seeing without feeling” show us a state of numbness on the person’s part—that state we all go through at some point in our relationships, after so many mistakes and betrayals. “How You Remind Me” is the song I can relate to the most on this entire list; especially because of the line “that’s how you really remind me of who I truly am,” which perfectly describes that image you end up seeing of yourself through the eyes of the person you once loved at some point in your life. Yes, I had that experience in the past with someone I loved and “gave a heart worth breaking.” Or perhaps her disappointment stemmed from my having broken her heart, since seeing “who I really am” turned out to be worse for her than I ever imagined.

How You Remind Me es la canción con la que me puedo llegar a identificar más de toda esta lista; sobre todo por su frase “así es como realmente me recuerdas, de lo que realmente soy”, la cual describe perfectamente esa imagen que uno termina viendo de uno mismo ante los ojos de esa persona que llegaste a amar en algún momento de tu vida. Si, tuve esa experiencia en el pasado con una persona que amé y le “entregué un corazón que vale la pena romper”. O puede que su decepción fuese por yo haberle roto su corazón ya que, al ver “lo que realmente soy” para ella terminó siendo peor de lo que me imaginé.
