In Germany cash is still king. A lot of us prefer it as it allows you to keep a better overview over how much you spend. In the super markets cash and card might be half/half (most of the cards being normal bank cards, not credit cards), but smaller businesses prefer cash. My butcher does accept card payment only from €10 on. I'd never buy a bread or a pizza or a coffee to-go with a card :)
