Good afternoon, @Geek Zone community and the rest of the great Hive family.
We continue with the repairs in our workshop. We have several devices on a list to repair.
Today we will present the case of a Xiaomi Redmi 9A with a microphone failure. When the customer makes or receives calls, the other person cannot hear them. As we always do, we will first carry out a diagnosis and then, if possible, the repair.
DIAGNOSIS
1- First, we are going to consider two hypotheses: the first is that the microphone itself may be faulty; the second is that some component of the circuit that integrates the microphone into the Board may be failing. But, as we always do, we are going to verify that the microphone activity on the phone really does not work. To do this, we open the recording application on the phone, speak, and see that there is really no change, indicating that it does not work.
2- We will start by checking the circuit. To do this, we will use our CircuitBit Tool. We will carry out a small study to familiarize ourselves with it and begin drawing conclusions. The microphone lines run from the Sudboar to the main board. So, we will open these two sections in CircuitBit.
When we open it, we see that there are two lines: the Cyan line AU_VIN0_P carries the captured audio signal to the system, and the orange line AU_MICBIAS0 supplies the necessary power voltage for the microphone to operate. The first one starts underneath the microphone, goes to a capacitor in parallel, then to a resistor in series, and finally to the FPC connector.
The second one also starts underneath the microphone, goes to a capacitor in parallel, and from there directly to the FPC.
On the main board, they run from the FPC to the PMIC; the first one passes through two capacitors in series, and the second one only through one capacitor in parallel.
3- We will disconnect the sudboard and begin the measurements. Before lifting the microphone, we will measure the lines of the sudboar at the series resistor and the other one at the capacitor in parallel. The first one gives us a value of 0.781 V, and the second 0.582.
Since this model is so common and we have several units of the same one in the workshop. Since we suspect that the 0.781 V value is somewhat higher than it should be, we will verify this parameter on another sudboar. When we measure it, it gives us a value of 0.584 V, very similar to that of the other line. So, here is the possible problem. The line is resistive; some component is offering a higher resistance than normal.
4- As the first final conclusion, we are sure that the fault is on the sudboard, and specifically on the AU_VIN0_P line, which we had seen has the function of carrying the captured audio signal to the system.
5- Now what remains is to clearly determine who the culprit is; whichever it is, it must be a component in series. As we know from our years of experience, when a reference signal rises, this is caused by a component in series or an IC, and when it goes down, the culprit is an element in parallel. So here, in series, there is only one resistor and the microphone, which can be considered to act as an IC. It is one of the two. To rule it out, we can either lift the microphone and measure again, or disconnect one side of the resistor and measure it.
REPAIR
1- In this phone, we have made the following decision: since charging is also a little slow because of the port. To avoid the work of changing the microphone or resistor in addition to the charging port, we will replace the entire sudboar for the customer, taking into account that we have several spare ones. Now we will perform the final test for the microphone. We will activate the recording application again and speak. Done, the line changes, registering the voice. On this board, everything works correctly.
This concludes this inspection and repair process. Analogical comparisons are also valid and often corroborate or rule out our hypotheses. When we have a board or some component identical to the one we are going to inspect, analogy will always be one of our best allies. Likewise, on some occasions, it is valid to replace an entire part rather than continually changing several failed components.
