📱🔧 Samsung Phone Lost Audio, but the Speaker Is Not Damaged. A Purely Technical Case.
My greetings to all of Hive and the great @geekzone community.
@geekzone.
A few days ago, we had worked in our workshop on a Samsung A21s with multiple issues: it was locked with a password that the customer did not remember, locked with a Google account, without the power button, and the speaker could not be heard. As a reminder, in that post we had dealt with the first three issues; regarding the last one, the customer was in a hurry, needed her phone urgently, and took it with her.
Well, this morning, she came back so we could fix the speaker problem, as nothing could still be heard from it. So, in what follows, we will focus on diagnosing the problem and carrying out the subsequent repair if it is within our capabilities.
DIAGNOSIS
DIAGNÓSTICO
1- Since the phone is functional, we do not need to check whether it charges or any other parameters. We will focus directly on the speaker. We remove the SIM tray and completely open the phone. Remember that on this model, the back cover must be detached using a small piece of radiographic film; then we unscrew and remove the upper frame, leaving it completely open. We now have access to the main board and the sub-board.
2- The first thing we will do now is measure the speaker's resistance. It should have a reading between 7 and 32 ohms. The variation depends on the speaker model, but in general, it falls within that range. On this phone model, the speaker is on the sub-board but mounted in the upper frame. We set our multimeter to the ohms scale. Regardless of polarity, we place one probe on one contact and the other multimeter probe on the speaker's other contact, look at the multimeter reading, and we get 7.2 ohms. So, for now, it is correct.
3- We are going to carry out a second test, this time using our power supply. We set it to 1 V and take the alligator clips, in the same way, regardless of polarity, placing each one on a speaker contact. We look at the reading on the power supply and it shows a tiny current draw of 0.056 A; the speaker also emits a small sound. This indicates that its internal winding is not broken and that the speaker is in good condition, so the fault must be elsewhere. Generally, technicians would always prefer this fault to be caused by a defective speaker, because then all we would have to do is replace it with a new one and that would be it. However, when that is not the case, diagnosis and subsequent repair are more complex, since these lines generally come from the audio codec and are directly related to the processor. Any of these components could be malfunctioning in this function, even though the phone is working correctly in its other functions.
4- Now we are going to measure the reference values at the speaker's two contacts on the sub-board. The speaker will always have two contacts: a positive supply pin and a negative one. With this measurement, we will check whether either of the two lines is broken or altered.
We set our multimeter to diode mode. Positive probe to ground and, with the negative probe, we measure the first contact. It is correct and gives us a reading of 0.452 V.
We measure the second contact. To our surprise, the reading is OL, which clearly means that the line is broken somewhere. The challenge now is to find the section where it is broken and try to restore it. It could also be that the IC generating that reference signal is damaged. But anyway, let's first check the first hypothesis.
5- To trace the lines, specifically the negative one that we believe is broken, we open our CircuitBit application, open the sub-board diagram, and there we see that both lines, negative and positive, run from the speaker contacts to a resistor each, and from there they go directly to the FPC or flex connector.
We measure the reference at the negative line's resistor and, once again, we also get OL.
6- We would still need to measure the reference at the flex's own FPC connector, but to do that, we would have to disconnect it, which would interrupt those two lines due to the disconnection. So now we will go to the main board to see whether the line reaches the upper FPC connector. In CircuitBit, we open the main board diagram, in the section for the microphone, speaker, and earpiece. Now we see that the negative line corresponds to pins 4 and 5 at the bottom of the FPC. Pins 6 and 7 are the positive line, which we already know is correct. We measure pins 4 and 5 and get a correct reading of 0.285 V. We now know at first glance that the IC generating these signals is working, which is a relief. We also deduce that the line is broken somewhere in the flex, or somewhere between the sub-board FPC and the previously mentioned resistor, or there is a contact problem between the flex's FPC connector and the sub-board FPC. We have already ruled out the latter, because we pressed it firmly and the signal still does not appear.
7- With the flex completely disconnected and knowing which line is the negative one on the board's FPC, we identify that line on the flex connecting both boards. We trace it and, near the lower FPC that connects to the sub-board, we scrape it and apply a little solder for better contact.
8- Now we connect the flex to the main board, turn it over, and measure the reference at the point on the flex that we scraped. We take the reading and there we go: we get a correct measurement of 0.287 V. So we have ruled out the flex, because the line is present at this point. We are not going to investigate further or replace the connectors themselves; we will proceed directly with the repair. We already know the diagnosis: the speaker cannot be heard because the return or negative line is absent at its connector.
REPAIR
REPARACIÓN
1- Our repair will consist of restoring that negative line. In these cases, we always look for the easiest place to solder, so we will make a jumper using a small wire running from the point we scraped on the flex to the negative line's resistor.
We take a small wire about the thickness of a hands-free headphone cable, approximately three centimeters long. We scrape it and tin both ends, solder one end, and with an extra-fine soldering iron tip, we solder one end to the scraped area of the flex and the other to the negative resistor, as mentioned earlier. Once done, we check that it is firmly secured and will not come loose.
2-Now we just need to verify that our repair was successful. First, with the flex cable connected at both ends, we measure again with our multimeter in diode mode to check whether the line has been restored. With the positive probe connected to ground and the negative probe positioned on the speaker's negative contact, we get a reading of 0.454 V. So, that's it! The speaker's negative line has been restored. We reassemble the phone and check that we now have audio. The customer is completely satisfied.
That is all for this post. Fortunately, it was a broken line. Sometimes, if the audio codec is at fault, that is, the integrated circuit that generates sound throughout the phone, it needs to be reballed or replaced. This fault is quite uncommon. What is more common is deterioration of the speaker itself, which, as we have already mentioned, is the least complicated issue, since it is simply replaced and that's it.
