🔧Samsung A10s Won't Turn On. A Desperate Customer and a Fault to Track Down. Diagnosis and Repair // Samsung A10s no enciende.
Good evening, friends of @geekzone, and also to the rest of Hive.
We bring you a repair today that, well, we have almost just finished. A customer brings us a Samsung phone that won't turn on. The phone looks quite deteriorated; even the screen appears somewhat cracked. But the customer says that it was working just like that, until it turned off and now won't turn on. As always, we will carry out a diagnosis and then, if possible, the repair.
DIAGNOSIS
DIAGNÓSTICO
1-First, we are going to identify the exact model of our phone. We look at the back cover and see that it is a Samsung A107, which corresponds to an A10s. We open our CircuitBit tool and look for the battery line so we can measure it without having to remove it, since the connector and flex cable look somewhat delicate. We see that the test points are precisely underneath the flex cable, so we had no choice but to carefully disconnect the battery connector. We take the opportunity to solder two wires that will also allow us to connect the phone to the power supply. We measure at the ends of the soldered positive and negative wires with our multimeter and observe a reading of 1.6 mV, meaning the battery is very discharged, well below the minimum value.
2-To rule out any short circuit or leakage, we will measure the reference values on the positive line at the same point where we measured the voltage. This time, however, we will first disconnect the battery. With the positive probe connected to ground and the negative probe on the measurement point, and the multimeter set to diode mode, we take a reading of 0.392 V, which is correct.
3-Now we connect our phone to the power supply using the soldered wires. With the battery disconnected, there is no current draw, so we rule out a short circuit or leakage. We connect the battery and immediately see a current draw from the power supply, which means it is charging correctly.
4-We measure the voltage at the power button. The button itself is missing, but the base pins are still there. When we probe them, we see that there is no voltage; the reading is 2.1 mV. So this is where the problem lies. In these cases, either the power button flex cable is faulty, or there is a broken line on the board that carries voltage to the button.
5-We return to CircuitBit to identify the power-on line, which we have now located. We see that the line originates at the PMIC, goes to a resistor, and from there continues to the power button contact on the board. Fortunately, it also branches off to a test point.
We remove the phone's board and measure the reference value at the power button contact. As always, we set the multimeter to diode mode, place the red probe on ground on the board, and use the black probe to measure the contact. To our surprise, we get an OL reading. This means the line is open.
We measure the reference value at the test point in the same way. Here we get a reading of 1.318 V, somewhat high, but this may be associated with the presence of a resistor in the line. We now have our final diagnosis. The line carrying voltage to the power button is broken somewhere beyond the test point.
REPAIR
REPARACIÓN
1-In this case, what we will do is restore the line from the test point, where we do have a reading, to the power key contact. To do this, we solder a small jumper, or thin wire, from the test point itself to the contact. We solder it, measure the reference value at the connector once again, and that's it: we now have a reading of 1.317 V here as well.
2-With the board still removed, we connect it to the power supply. Using tweezers, we make contact between the two pins, the power key and ground, and immediately observe a small current draw from the power supply, between 0.016 and 0.027 A, indicating that the PMIC has been activated. The phone will not turn on yet, of course, because it needs the battery ID for that.
3-We put the board back in place, connect the flex cables, measure the voltage at the power button pins, and that's it: we get 4.16 V, which is correct, since that is the voltage being supplied by the power supply.
4-Finally, we connect the battery. Using the tweezers, we make contact with both tips on the power button pins, and that's it: the phone has turned on.
That concludes this repair process. Fortunately, in this case, we were able to restore the line using a component that we also identified. If we had not obtained a reference reading at the test point, we would have had to remove the shields and trace the line with the help of CircuitBit. In the worst-case scenario, as has happened in other cases, the PMIC itself may be failing to generate that voltage, in which case it would have to be replaced.
