Good afternoon to the great @Geek Zone family and the rest of Hive.

Today we present another repair, in this case a Huawei Y6 2019 locked with a Google account. However, in this case, at the customer's request, we will not remove the account. Instead, we will restore the connection lines to the PC.

The customer tells us that the phone was factory reset and turned on asking for the Google account, which they do not remember. A family member who is a mobile software technician would unlock it, but when connecting it to the PC, the PC showed no signs of recognizing it.

Generally, mobile repair shops have one technician dedicated to software and another to hardware. They are like two specialties: the first is responsible for decoding, removing Google accounts, dealing with radio-frequency problems at the hardware level, and issues associated with the software without the need to open the device. Meanwhile, the second one solves power-on problems, replaces parts, screens, charging ports, and other aspects related to the physical part.

In our workshop, we do both specialties. Due to necessity and personal interest, although we are two technicians, I have learned about both areas.

Let's get to the case. We will also perform a diagnosis and subsequently carry out the repair if possible.

DIAGNOSIS

1- The first thing we know is that connecting a mobile phone to a PC is done through the USB port. In this case, it is Type B. It has 5 pins on its rear side, and each one performs its function. In order, we have:

  • Charging positive: precisely for the phone charging process.

  • Data negative: For the process of transmitting information between a PC and the phone.

  • Data positive: Together with data negative, also for the process of transmitting information between a PC and the phone.

  • ID: For connecting external peripherals through the port, such as a mouse, keyboard, OTG.

  • Charging negative: Together with charging positive, this is the path through which the current that powers the battery flows.

So, in our case, we will open the phone and inspect the positive and negative data lines.

2- Once the phone is opened, which, by the way, is in pretty bad condition, the first thing we notice is that the flex cable connecting the subboard to the main board is missing. Obviously, it will not transmit data, it will not even charge or provide a microphone. There is no communication whatsoever between the subboard and the main board, so this is the cause of the problem that prevents the PC from reacting when it is connected. And how was it charging? The customer tells us that they had previously taken it to another technician, and at that workshop, this flex cable was completely damaged. But before that, at least it was charging.

REPAIR

1- We already know what the problem is. Our task will be to restore the data and charging lines so that the phone can be unlocked. So, we will focus on these four lines: charging positive and negative, and data positive and negative.

2- Once again, we will use our valuable Circuit Bit tool. Fortunately, this model is available, a Huawei Y6 2019. We will open the subboard section. All the lines go directly from the USB port to the FPC connector.

3- Now we will open the main board section. Here we can see that the data lines go directly from the FPC connector to the CPU, but fortunately, there is a verification point or test point on the upper side of the FPC connector. So, we will use these for the connection. There is also a test point for charging positive.

4- We are now clear about what we are going to do. We will make 4 jumpers with small-gauge wires from the subboard to the main board. The data lines, as well as the charging negative and positive, will be made from the USB connector to the corresponding test points on the main board.

5- Once the jumpers have been soldered, we will first verify that the phone charges. We will use our power supply as a tester. We connect it and see that charging is activated on the phone. There is also a consumption of 0.483 A, indicating that the solution has been effective on the charging side.

6- We turn on the phone, and now we will test it on the PC. To verify that we were successful, the PC must recognize it through the MTP port. We connect it and that's it. A message appears indicating the brand and model, which means that it has been recognized. So, that's it: assemble it and deliver it to the customer.

This is the end of this process of restoring the data lines. It was possible to do it relatively quickly thanks to our Circuit Bit tool. Otherwise, we would have had to search for information on the Web, which would have taken us much more time, and sometimes the information does not even appear, making it impossible to repair it blindly.

Thanks to all the readers. All the images are entirely my own.
