Good afternoon, @Geek Zone community and the rest of Hive.

For those who follow me, today we are taking a break from the project to look at a quick inspection and diagnosis of some mobile phones.

Today, a customer brought three somewhat old mobile phones to our workshop for inspection. A family member who had been keeping them gave them to him to see if any of them worked so he could use one, since he didn't have a phone. All three are without batteries.

The phones are from the following brands: a VIVACELL, a MYCOM, and a SAMSUNG. The first two are keypad phones, while the last one is a touchscreen phone, but also an old model.

Since the customer only wants to know what is defective, not have the phones repaired, we will carry out our usual diagnosis.

The main strategy will be to measure reference values and connect the phones to the power supply to see if they turn on or have a short circuit. Let's begin.

VIVACELL Phone

1- With the multimeter set to diode mode, we measure the positive terminal of the battery connector. The reading is correct: 0.483 V. We measure the negative terminal, and it is also correct, measuring 0.005 V.

2- We connect the phone to the power supply without a battery. There is no initial current consumption, so everything is correct. We press the power button, and the phone begins to turn on. The startup process completes successfully, but the screen is clearly broken.

3- The diagnosis is very simple: the phone's main board is working correctly, but the display is internally broken.

MYCOM Phone

1- We measure the reference values with the multimeter in diode mode, placing the red probe on ground and the black probe on the positive terminal of the battery connector. We get 0.481 V on the positive terminal, which is correct, and 0.003 V on the negative terminal, also a correct reading.

2- Without the battery, we connect the phone to the power supply according to the correct polarity. We see that there is no initial current consumption, indicating that there is no short circuit or leakage on the board. We press the power button, and the phone begins its startup cycle. It completes the process, but, as in the previous case, the screen is damaged.

3- As a diagnosis, the board is working correctly, with no short circuits or leakage, but the display is completely damaged.

SAMSUNG Phone

1- We measure the reference values, and they are correct. In this case, we get 0.401 V on the positive pin of the battery connector and 0.0.003 V on the negative pin.

2- We connect the phone to the power supply without a battery, and there is no initial current consumption. Therefore, this phone also has no leakage or short circuit, at least on the main lines. We press the power button, and the phone turns on correctly. The display works properly.

3- As a final diagnosis, we can say that this phone is functional. It just needs a suitable battery, and it will be ready to use.

RECOMMENDATION TO THE CUSTOMER

1- Of the three phones, the one in the best condition is the SAMSUNG, since it is fully functional and only needs a battery. In the other two cases, the repairs are more complex. Replacement screens and batteries are required, and for these keypad phones, finding replacement screens is quite difficult.

That's all for this post about inspecting these three phones to make a recommendation to the customer. All images are my own work. Thanks to all the readers for their interest.
