Alcatel Phone with a Typical Charging Issue. Diagnóstico y reparación paso a paso
Good afternoon once again to this great community @Geek Zone and all of Hive.
Today we will look at the case of an Alcatel 5029E that is not charging. The customer tells us that for the past few days it had been charging very slowly, that he had to move the USB cable for it to start charging, but now it does not charge at all.
The charging failure is one of the most common issues in our workshop, and the most common reason is damage to the charging port. It is rarely caused by a failure in protection or regulation components such as the OVP, charging IC, or overvoltage protection diodes.
We will continue with our usual procedure: carrying out the diagnosis and subsequently the repair if it is within our capabilities.
DIAGNÓSTICO
DIAGNOSIS
1- Without opening the device, we perform a visual inspection of the charging port from the outside. In this case, we can clearly see that the charging port is badly damaged, the internal pins are severely destroyed, and the external structure is badly widened, which is typical of using the USB cable as a lever from one side to the other. Usually, even when the port looks damaged, we insert the USB cable and take measurements, but in this case, this will not be possible because the pins and the entire internal part are destroyed. So our initial diagnosis is already clear: the charging port is completely damaged.
REPARACIÓN.
REPAIR.
1- Since we already have the diagnosis, our repair will consist of replacing the charging port. So we will remove the SIM tray and open the device.
2- Once opened, we are going to remove the subboard, but in this model, just like the 5028A we saw in another post, the subboard has the flex cable that connects it to the main board soldered to it. So here we will also have to lift the battery with extreme care, because that flex cable, as well as the display flex cable, is located underneath the battery.
3- After removing the subboard, we will proceed to remove the damaged charging port. There is a particularity here: we will remove it using only the soldering iron, without the hot air station. In these models, based on our years of experience, we know that using the hot air station can cause the flex cable to become unsoldered or break the microphone or speaker traces.
4- Now that we have removed the port, we will place our subboard in an elevated board holder. We will clean the four holes where the four port anchors go using the soldering iron and desoldering wick, so that we can properly insert the new port.
5- We place the new port and solder the anchors inserted into the holes. We also solder the 5 rear pins that make contact with the board. We connect the USB cable and take the first measurement with our multimeter, and that's it. We now have 5.31 V on the subboard, so our phone should now charge.
6- We place the subboard back into the phone, connect the flex cable to the main subboard, and now, using our power supply as a USB tester, we connect the cable and see a small fluctuation in current consumption between 0.04 and 0.062 A, indicating that the circuit is trying to identify the battery, which is not connected. We measure the battery connector with the multimeter and get 4.08 V, which is a correct charging voltage.
7- Now we install and connect the battery. We perform the charging test once again with our power supply and get a positive result, a current consumption of 0.477 amps, finally indicating that the phone is charging. Our repair has been successful. So, finally, we completely reassemble the device, and it is now ready to be delivered to the customer.
That concludes this repair process. Thanks to all the readers for your interest. We have already seen several cases involving charging port replacement, each one always having its own particularity. All images are entirely my own.
