Windows 11 was finally released for public few days ago... Last weekend I did try to install it on my work PC...
Downloading the installer was the easiest part, but once the installer started, things started to go wrong. During first stage of install, it replaces display adapter driver, which caused my screen to go blank. Even after waiting for a while, the display did stay blank. I did try to reset the display adapter drivers using the special keyboard shortcut, which did result installer appearing again. I waited until the installation finished and my computer rebooted back to login screen.
Every time my computer went to power-saving mode, the display got distorted, basically making all windows really small. This is pretty much symptom of display adapter driver being unable to detect and return correct scaling factor or screen bounds for my 4k display.
I tried testing simple applications like Notepad and Paint, and opening files like Word documents. I had no serious issues with Notepad, it worked just like on Windows 10, but Paint wouldn't even start... I uninstalled Paint and reinstalled it from Windows Store... After the reinstall, it started working. To open Word documents, the file has to be moved to One Drive account first and it will be opened with Office 365 using default browser.
To test more complex features, I tried starting Ubuntu 18.04 with WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux). This is were things started to go seriously wrong. After just few minutes, Windows 11 did panic with black screen with stop code "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT". This caused Windows to corrupt files on hard disk and reboot back to login screen. After deleting the corrupted files and recreating them, Windows did show the same black screen over and over.
I rolled back to Windows 10 and tried to run same commands in Ubuntu 18.04 and it did reveal more corrupted files... I did remove those files too, and did rerun the commands once more. Now the commands finished with no errors and I could resume my work.
To summarize things, Windows 11 still has a lot of things that need fixing before it is ready for either developers or end users.
