Mirador del Rio is Lanzarote’s most famous viewpoint. It's located 1,630 ft (497 metres) above sea level. It overlooks the northern coastline, the straits of El Rio and the Isla Graciosa. This viewpoint in the 16th century was used by the Spanish settlers to keep a lookout for pirates, who invaded and pillaged the island on an on-going basis.
In 1898 a small fortress and gun battery was added to the site when Spain went to war with the USA over the ownership of Cuba.
