Discovering architectural lines
What is this?
While visiting Tokyo on a recent trip, we spent a day exploring shrines and just walking the streets in Kamakura. I love to see how people live and the look of their local businesses. Japan is full of old neighborhoods that appear somewhat junky because of how they were built and added on to. No high-end shopping, just plain working shops. I don’t know what it all is – air conditioners, heaters, fans, ducting, all kinds of things that make it seem a bit like a cacophony of the built environment.
There was one street corner that caught my attention – where the irregularly-angled streets made for buildings having every imaginable angle to them in one place or another. I did a quick pencil sketch of it and then later filled it in with more imaginary shapes and textures. This was so free and fun to work on because there was no way to make a mistake really, just opportunities to make it interesting.
The original drawing
Later I scanned the drawing and recreated it using Adobe Illustrator to be a vector file. Lastly I developed a color palette and applied it.
